On Thursday morning we bade farewell to Wilma. It had been a very cold night in Wangaratta, as it often is, but we had been extremely comfortable and as warm as toast at Wilma’s. After doing a bit of shopping in Wang we headed off to Mansfield which was about one and half hours drive away. We stopped for a quick cuppa and Beesting in Mansfield Botanical Park and then headed out to the Reeves’ (Simone, Mark, Zoe, Ken and Beth) house which is about 9kms out of town and then a short distance along a gravel track. All of the family were out at various places but we were greeted like long lost friends by Spotty the dog. When we had visited soon after our arrival in Aus, the caravan was surrounded by water. There ... read more

Day 349 - Bridge Creek (Mansfield) After our few days out bush we can’t deny it was nice to have a hot shower this morning! Everyone was having a bit of a lie in this morning, the last Saturday before the end of the school holidays. We wanted to find out a bit more about the animated theatre at Glenrowan which depicts ‘Ned Kelly’s last stand’. Ken and Beth have mentioned that they’d love to go and a quick phone call to the chap that runs it gave us the all clear that the place is open today and we’d easily be able to get on to any of the 40 minute ‘tours’. Perfect! Zoe wasn’t being left out (it’s not that we don’t love her as much as the other two!) but she’s got a ... read more

Days 345 - 348 Box Hill Resort to Sheepyard Flats (Tuesday 6th April to Friday 9th April) It’s very weird being at Box Hill without the caravan. It means we have to sleep in the house, in a bedroom with a full size bed and everything! Not only is the bed in the house twice the size of the one in the caravan but it’s also twice the size of the one at home in the UK! It’s the Australian Way to like things big! Tonight however we won’t be in a house or the caravan, tonight we’ll be under ‘canvas’ in the heart of the High Country with a full array of stars above us.. Luckily we’re both feeling A OK this morning, any ill effects from the “12 hour bug” had completely disappeared. Grant, ... read more

Day 341 - Bridge Creek Hurrah for Dar for he turns 52 today! Happy Birthday Hun, I hope you really enjoy your day. Love you millions! There were a few presents to open which was nice, a couple from me, one from Mum & Dad Kettle which arrived here at Bridge Creek yesterday. Then there was the card from the Coulsells back home in the UK which has travelled with us for the entire trip! Dar finally got to open it this morning which gave him a smile. The house was quiet this morning when we first got up, we needed to get our car into town for a service so we decided I’d drive Simone’s in and Dar would follow behind. There was no need to look for the keys, we knew exactly where they ... read more

Day 340 - Bridge Creek Hip Hip Hooray, look who’s twelve today! Happy Birthday Zoe Reeves! The birthday girl was on fine form this morning and thoroughly enjoyed her main present of a net ball hoop and stand. She’s so tall she can almost pop the ball in without even having to get on tip toes! Beth however is finding there’s fun to be had in the box the hoop and stand came in! Before long she’s popped herself inside so Ken & Zoe can sticky tape it back together but then they carry her outside telling us all to ‘hang on, they’re just putting the rubbish out’!! It’s a good job the dustbin lorry isn’t coming til tomorrow. Every now and then a finger pokes out from a tiny hole in the top of the ... read more

Day 339 - Bridge Creek The house was very quiet first thing this morning! The kids were spread all over the place but at least there was one constant, Jake was fast asleep on the sofa in the front room! People slowly begin to drift off during the morning, Wils & his set of kids are the first to go as he needs to travel home which is south of Melbourne somewhere. I’d been a bit concerned during the shed activities that one of the kids had accidentally drunk some of my beautiful cocktail of Wine, Cider and Cordial but when it happened again much later in the evening when all the youngsters were safely in bed my suspicions turned elsewhere - Wils! He is a secret cordial lover!! It’s so secret that he doesn’t even ... read more

Day 338 - Mystery Bay to Bridge Creek Today wasn’t the beautiful, bright sunny day that we’d ordered for our trip up in to the mountains. Overcast, misty and dare we say it a little bit miserable. We said our goodbyes to Vicky and Jay this morning, hopefully our paths will cross again in the future and we wish them well with all their plans. We’d asked advice from Jay as to which route we should take to get us up into the Alpine area. It’s not going to be the flattest of journeys, but we’re pretty used to that now. Our intention was to check out the free camp spots in the mountains but as we got closer it was fairly obvious the spectacular view we’d promised ourselves was not going to be delivered. It’s ... read more

This morning we wandered around the main street of Healesville and around the area before heading north east. We drove through beautiful mountain country - I think the tall straight gumtrees are Mountain Ash and underneath prolific tree ferns. Once we came closer to Maryville, the scenery changed to blackened trees, tree stumps and the green growth that we'd seen yesterday on the Kingslake trees. I think the Maryville fire was hotter though as fewer trees survived. Everywhere there are clearings with dead trees piled high. Driving into Maryville was a shock. I think most of the town was destroyed and the death toll was I think 73 from last year's fires. I read on Wikipedia that Google Earth shows Marysville as it was before the fires .. it was certainly a beautiful, lush mountain town. ... read more

Day 312 (Box Hill to Mansfield) through to the morning of Day 320 (leaving Mansfield) Ok, so this blog is huge. Apologies for that but we thought it would be better to 'do it all in one go'. We had the best of times in Mansfield with beautiful friends old and new. Here's what we got up too!! The land of do as you please (Wed 3rd) We left Box Hill this morning and set our Tom Tom destined for Mansfield in the high country of Victoria. It's where the Reeves live, the crazy, beautiful Reeves family that we travelled with down much of the Western Australia coast. We last saw them in the Grampians not long after New Year and we’re very excited to be able to spend a few more days with them. Our ... read more
