Last night we stayed in a rest stop up in the snowy mountains and it was freezing! We had to break out the sleeping bags and I was wearing 2 layers of clothes. Nevertheless the rest area was nice and at least we were up early and back on the road. Around mid-morning we decided to pull over at a town called Merimbula and take a walk along the nature boardwalk. It's a nice little walk around the inlet and it takes you past Oyster farms. We then got back on the road and headed for Eden (not the Adam and Eve kind), our original plan was to visit the Killer Whale museum but the sun came out and so we hit the beach - I had some strap lines to get rid of! The beach ... read more

Port Albert to Lakes End Said our farewells to the Australian couple we had met in the B and B in Port Albert, they were very interested in what was happening in the UK and we had a lively conversation about the state of the world and education in particular. A relatively short journey to our next destination Lakes Entrance which was a 3 hour drive up the coast. Arrived at around 1.00pm, the place resembled the Bates Motel from the Hitchcock thriller Psycho, I reassured Pauline she would be quite safe taking a shower. Motored into Lakes End, fabulous location but the town was a little run down and looked more like the arse end of Australia. Undeterred we walked over the footbridge to one of the island spits and enjoyed watching the breakers coming ... read more

On Monday we left Merimbula after a coffee by the lake and rolled back down Princes Highway to Eden. We had a quick bite to eat at Aslings Beach and then headed south back into Victoria where we pulled up at the free camp in Genoa again. It was a toasty afternoon and a backpacker added to the relaxed atmosphere by playing a few tunes on his acoustic guitar. Tuesday we headed east to Mallacoota and after a scenic drive through the green hills we came across the isolated yet beautiful coastal town. We took a walk along the main drag before having lunch near the shimmering Mallacoota Inlet. From there we took a drive a few kms out of town to the sparkling Betka Beach and while it did not appear to be a spot ... read more

Monday morning was back to winter type weather as we got up to grey skies and icey winds in Omeo. We headed south and even though the weather was not fantastic the Victorian countryside is quite striking. At Conner’s Hill lookout we met some fellow South Aussies who gave us a recommendation to stay at Lakes Entrance so that is where we headed. As we got closer to the coast the weather cleared up and Lakes Entrance provided some fantastic vantage points to look out over the water. We decided to stay for a couple of nights and after settling in had fish and chips by the lake and the flake pieces proved a big hit. Tuesday morning Rachel had a meeting early so I headed out for a walk in the sun along the coast. ... read more

So... since the last time we wrote, we have actually seen other parts of Australia other than Wairewa, Lakes Entrance and the FARM! We have EVEN been out of Victoria and ventured into New South Wales (Sydney). After spending more than 88 days on our beloved farm, we have now got our 2nd year visa's for Oz and can officially stay for another year. We actually realised the other night thanks to Rob quizzing us on the states that we have been here long enough to be able to name all locations and state names! Very exciting and also very geeky! The farm..... well there were good and bad days there but overall we would probably do it again and the work itself wasn't entirely back breaking but after several months, got quite repetitive. And as ... read more

Four weeks after leaving Melbourne, we spent our first night in a proper bed. And we slept like logs! In the morning, we had the opportunity to check out Blaithin and Rory’s absolutely stunning house, before having breakfast on the balcony overlooking the lake… and the neighbour’s house, which is a castle. We experienced total house envy and are happy to house-sit anytime at all, you guys! After a leisurely morning (it was the morning of the night before), we took a drive and visited the Buchan Caves. These caves were actually discovered with tourism in mind. They were created by an underground stream which still fills the nearby, rather murky looking, “swimming pool”. The stalactites and stalagmites were very impressive and, as it was a sweltering 42 degree day, the 17 degree underground temperature was ... read more

We were sorry to be leaving our lovely, roomy motel room in Rawson after an exciting couple of days but on Friday 3rd February we began our journey further east towards Lakes Entrance. A few kilometres out of Rawson Graham spotted a sign for Peterson’s Lookout and since we had plenty of time we decided to explore. Unlike the gravel road to Mount Erica the road to Peterson’s Lookout was poor but, again unlike Mount Erica, the end result was excellent. The poor gravel road led to an even worse gravel walking track which had seen better days but the final views were sensational. The industrial areas that Grant had warned us about (Moe, Traralgon and Morwell) were visible in the very far distance and we could see four power stations. The immediate views, however, reminded ... read more

today (23rd Feb) we left the comforts of nyree's home and headed out on our long trip ahead. We decided that our first port of call would be Lakes Entrance (via the long way round) after taking a cruisy 6 hours making our way to lakes Entrance, after stoping off at the infomation center we found ourselfs a nice little caravan park in the middle of town called Sunny side. once we parked and set up we soon made friends with our neighbours, the people next to us where an enghlish couple, they gave us a few useful tips and hint to help with the trip ahead. we got talking and found out that they from brelwick and the people on the other side where from rosebud. the next morning (24th) i got up early to ... read more
