23rd September, we celebrated my 20th birthday!:D
The night before we decided to make my birthday cake as we wouldn't have time on the day, so we borrowed Hannah and David's chocolate cake recipe as they said it was really good! We began making it at 7pm and didn't finish til about 9.30pm, lol it was a long process but it turned out to be yummy! We made the first layer which didn't rise that high as we didn't put enough cake mixture in and the second layer took ages to bake as it had too much cake mixture in lol! The icing is the best bit, we put it on top of the cake and a layer in between, we have photos! Maybe our parents will be lucky and we'll make it for them when we get back 😉
We woke up around 9am on my birthday, Liam didn't get much of a lie-in, he is so tired from a weeks work as he's been given full time hours this week (welcome to the real world Liam ha not that I've ever worked a full week in my life!). I opened my cards that had been sitting in
my suitcase for 3 months, thank you to the family if you are reading this it was nice opening my cards, otherwise I would've only had one from Liam! From Liam I got a cute card and some lovely pressies! A Pandora bracelet with a heart charm, a pair of sandals and a journal to write our blogs in when travelling, as I'm not taking my laptop with us - don't worry we will update our blog at the hostels we are staying in with internet access! I also got two cards in the post one from Sophie's parents and another one from Brad, Sophie and Hayley it was a surprise, it has photos of us on the front and a nice message inside, it was really lovely of them to send me a card 😊 miss you guys!
After present and card opening, we got ready for the day. We walked to bus station to get the bus to Barown Heads, we managed to find the right bus which took about half an hour to get there so it wasn't too bad. The bus driver was friendly and dropped us off near Jirrahlinga (the wildlife sanctuary). Although he
dropped us off near, it was still a bit of a walk (as is everywhere in Australia) down a dirt track road, we didn't know if we were heading in the right direction but carried on regardless.
We made it to Jirrahlinga around 12ish, cost $15 each to get in which wasn't too bad. First animal we saw was a Cockatoo that spoke to us, it kept saying 'Hello Cocky' lol it made us laugh, I thought it was a fake bird at first ha! We have a video I will try and upload it 😊 Walking around the sanctuary we saw lots of different Ozzie birds and other animals! There was a white peacock, which neither of us had ever seen before, it opened its feathers and looked beautiful. The little wallabies were cute they came up to us and posed for the camera lol. Liam managed to make the dingos angry and they all started howling at us, it was pretty scary wouldn't want to meet one of them in the wild! One of the funniest moments of the day was a fearless magpie coming up to both me and Liam and getting closer and closer, he
wanted to peck us! He pecked Liam's foot haha it was funny, I managed to run away from the bird!
We had lunch there, we made our own packed lunch before we left (Dad I know you'll be proud of me haha) to save some money! On the way out we saw a worker with a baby dingo, I ran over as fast as I could, as some of my friends from uni have already been to the sanctuary and got to hold them, so I knew I might be able to if I was quick enough! She started talking to us and said I could hold him before, in her words 'the boss came' - he was SO cute! I want oneee! He looked like an Alsation puppy! Liam wasn't bothered by it, but I kept going on about the baby dingo all day 😊
After leaving the sanctuary we had a problem, there were no bus stops on the opposite side of the road! We walked down quite far to see if there were any, but we had no luck so we started to get worried. We knew there was a bus coming at 3.20pm but
we didn't know where it was going to stop! In the end, we decided to stay at the bus stop we previously saw a bus stopping at. We waited for an hour as we were out of the sanctuary quite early, when it got to 3.25pm we were panicking and praying the bus was late! 5 minutes later, after much relief we saw the bus in the distance with GEELONG on the front. We asked the bus driver just to make sure, luckily it was the right bus!
We got home around 4ish, had a slice of choccie cake, spoke to Hannah who recommended a place to eat and got ready to go out for dinner! We went with Hannah's recommendation, the restaurant is about 10-15 min walk from the house so it wasn't far to walk. We wanted a decent steak, and we got one! It was the best steak I've ever tasted, served to us on a 400 degrees stone grill in which you cook the steak on yourself! The table near us got served first and we watched them, I was thinking this is going to be a rushed dinner, trying to keep an eye on
the steak all the time and the last piece of steak is going to be too well done for my liking. But I was wrong, yes it was a quick dinner but OMG it was amazing! I keep ranting on about it, all we talked about throughout dinner was how good it tasted. I ordered a Porterhouse Steak, with a side of Chilli Con Carne, nachos and chips - it was like two dinners for the price of one it was on Special that night for $24 and Liam ordered a mixed grill with bits of lamb, beef and chicken, roasted veggies and chips! We had a feast! We are going to have to go back before we leave Geelong, it's too yummy to resist!
We came back home for dessert, we were too stuffed to eat much more at the restaurant so we had our lovely choccie cake a few hours after! I'm talking too much about food, so I'll stop now lol. I had a great birthday spending it with Liam, holding a cute baby dingo and the best steak in the world! Don't worry Mum and Dad I did miss you, on my first birthday without
you! Hope you all enjoy the photos! We only have 4 weeks until we start travelling, we are getting excited now :D I booked the first few hostels today!!
Speak soon, miss you all xxxx
