Hi Everyone! Im writing to you all from my peaceful oblivion (my bed) as I havnt been able to get any shut eye and was tossing and turning in my sheets I thought, Hey! Why dont I begin to write my day to day travels and adventures on blog site for a new years resolution! So here goes! Just to bring everyone up to speed that doesnt know me and for other bloggers or various others who stop by my blog, I am a pommie who ventured out to Australia in September 2013 for a change of scenery and I was also given the opportunity by my elder sister who lives out here to come and live with her and her partner. I am on a 417 working holiday visa and I am now in my ... read more

Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne: approximately 3.04pm. A collective sigh goes up from the crowd. It seems no one had fancied the Bart Cummings long shot… No.10 Viewed. Along with 106,000 other happy race-goers, my good mate Chris and I, along with his cousins (hailing from Melbourne) made our way to Flemington for one of the world’s most prestigious horse races. Now let me say I know absolutely nothing about horse racing, other than that betting on them is a mug’s game. However, that being said I think I was probably one of only a handful of people cheering on the roughie as Viewed crossed the line first by a whisker. Yes, by absolute fluke I had somehow managed to back a winner, much to the ire of the seasoned punters around me. My $5 bet paid huge ... read more

Hi Everyone, So this is it, this is really it. Two weeks to go and there's no turning back now. The only problem is we can't leave the country just yet, no passport or visa!! Small detail. Thought we'd give this blog thing a try, and make sure it's all working before we head overseas. So we're packing the house up, as well as our backpack and our lives and we're really going around the world for a year and a bit. The hugeness of it all is starting to hit, we're taking a year off to travel the world. All we'll have is our packs and each other. Til next time. Much Love. Shelle and Stephen. ... read more

So as if Cup day on Tuesday wasn't enough, we got to do it all again on Thursday at Oaks Day - only this time, we were in the posh bit with the food and drink thrown in, courtesy of work! It was also one of the hottest days so far - Claire and I spent the whole time in the marquee hiding from the sun. It just so happened that the beer was also in the marquee hiding from the sun, so it worked well! I didn't win a thing - yet again. It seems that my luck at Avoca at the start of the season wasn't to last. After not even placing in the first three races, I basically gave up. Claire had a small win at the end and was quite content to ... read more

Melbourne Cup Day!! Such a big event in Victoria that everyone gets the day off work - and 110,000 folk pack into Flemington Race Course for the racing event of the year. This week is actually the kinda main week of the racing season - the Melbourne Cup Carnival, with four big race meets happening over the week. It’s really massive - might even be bigger than the footie, which was massive! The weather was fab - roastin hot and sunny. We arrived at Flemington at about 11am and soon found a spot to set up camp just in front of the finishing line. Such a fantastic atmosphere - I was on the verge of wearing shorts and a t-shirt - if I had, I’d have been the only one - everyone was seriously well dressed ... read more

One could be forgiven for thinking Spring Racing was all about the horses! Any Melbournite knows the best time to be in town is for the carnival. Spray tans, hats and stunning head pieces (fascinators to the fashionistas) - it's a milliners heaven. The gardens at Flemington Racecourse are in full bloom and the fashions on the field (where a mere $350,000 is up for grabs!) is held by the heel-sinking green lawns. Three races ... one week. Thankfully the PM sees the importance of this non-stop party week and we're given a public holiday for Melbourne Cup Day. Yep - a public holiday for a horse race!! Spring Racing Carnival is also the only week of the year I'll succomb to full scale snobbery - it's members all the way! A good place to be, ... read more

Over 60,000 people turned up to perfect 28 degree weather. I'm $25 richer thanks to betting on a horse named 'Glamour Puss'. LOL. For awhile I made that my tactic - betting on catchy names - until I went for a certain 'Miss Potential' who really did have potential - she lead in the beginning. Then she ended up last. Some people had interesting dresses and hats. Being 'Family Day' at the races, we were surrounded by really young pretty people, unfortunately some guys - I mean boys - couldn't even fill out their suits, and some young pretty girls looked like they were dressed for daytime clubbing. Just a little bit wrong. Is it weird for me to say I found the horses more gorgeous than the made-up, nicely-dressed women? They are such fine creatures. ... read more

Melbourne cup Hallo paardenliefhebbers!!!

Sometimes in my line of work, I get perks such as invitations to special events around town. One such event was the Girls Day Out at Flemington Racecourse. This is also where the Melbourne Cup race is held every November. To give you an idea of how big horse-racing is here, Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in Melbourne. My complimentary invite was to the final of a model search competition going on at one of the sponsors' marquee. Lil came along. Every girls dream to be surrounded by tall skinny models. I reasoned that maybe the free bubbly will get me tipsy enough to forget about my self-esteem... The emcee gave introductions to each contestant, told us what their ambitions were. We had the typical "She wants to be a supermodel". Having worked with ... read more
