Good morning
Those leaves smell delicious. March 23
Martin Luther king ‘Dreamed a dream’. I did too: Pancakes with brandy sauce, cream and fruit salad for breakfast with a glass of bubbly to celebrate my XXth birthday. Later, reality struck, Weetabix and yoghurt. Oh well, never mind. Then David and Mary arrived and sang happy birthday and delivered red hot sauce which I will use on a pizza base soon.
The night was windy and morning cold, but by mid morning we started to see the rain clouds disappear and the sun came out. The camera came out again around the park looking for co-operative critters to have their pic taken.
After lunch, David and I walked the sandy trail out to Station Beach. This beach is on the western side of Cape Otway, and the only way to these beaches is by foot or other transport like quad bike, mountain bike etc. Not that the quad bike could ascend the sandy embankment from the beach for the first 50 or 60 meters as it was soft windblown sand drift – the kind that each step forward makes negative progress.
At the south eastern end of Station beach is Rainbow Falls. Here a stream trickles
over the cliff face and through a combination of calcium deposits and algae, a rain bow effect has been created. While the falls were not far from where we came to the beach, the tide was too far in to risk the beach walk. You will see from the photos that there was a heavy swell running from the south west, probably 2 to 3 meter surf. Rugged, yes. Deserted, yes, and with poor access and a wild combination of surf an reefs, rocks etc, not a place to fish, surf or swim.
The walk back to Bimbi Park up from the beach was hard work. In places the path had a board walk, but in several places it was climb the dunes up the well marked paths.
We were amused with the scrubby trees which had substantial trunks bent over parallel with the ground away from the prevailing wind.
Noticeably absent on the day were birds other than some little high speed darting birds that disappeared very quickly when we approached. Then they laughed at us from the next scrubby tree behind the path just to let us know they had avoided us. With very few

but she doen't like her photo taken. flowering bushes in the heath land, it was not surprising that honey eaters and the like would be absent. Once back into the camp which has substantial trees, the picture changed immediately except most of the small birds seem very shy. Not so the members of the parrot family who watch intently in case we break park rules. Apparently Mary offended them yesterday. They showed their disapproval in the customary way of birds. A short time later Mary was seen washing her hair.
As the day, and particularly the late afternoon was quite warm, we set up a table under David’s annex and had our meal together. David has incredible long sight, and he saw what can only be described as a living Koala drop bear – a huge koala. This animal was 200 or 300 meters from us, way out on a limb consuming every leaf in site. Even leaves on the slender end of the branch were attacked by bending the branch end back in a loop and hanging on like grim death while the leaves were eaten. I have included photos which hopefully illustrate how big he was when distance is considered.
All in all,
I enjoyed my birthday, celebration dinner and the sense of peace away from crazy city life.
