Another day another flight. This time we were leaving Asia behind and heading off to Australia. When your travelling, moving on is always exciting but this time was even more so, as after five months in Asia we were really in need of some western normality. The flight from Singapore only took seven hours but because of the time difference we arrived in Sydney at six am having had no sleep whatsoever. After going through customs where Becky was pulled up for having a sachet of tomato ketchup in her bag (apparently an offence if not declared)! we headed off to the arrivals lounge for a full English breakfast (heaven). After our hearty feed and a proper cup of tea we jumped on a bus to a hotel we had booked through the airport, where we ... read more

The Wild Green West is a three day west coast tour of Tasmania (otherwise known as Apple Isle) booked through Adventure Tours (www.adventuretours.com.au). Day one included hours of travel on the bus (and an opportunity to grab several naps to catch up on the time adjustment) from Hobart to Tullah. In between naps, I discovered the diversity of our group of 21 tourists. Combined, we represented a wide range of areas across the world: America, Asia, England, Ireland, France, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, Canada and Holland. Needless to say, I have been exposed to the surface of many cultures and now have a deep fondness for the French accent. Amber and I were the only Americans and were generally picked on by our tour guide, Adam (from Australia) because of our accents and Texas residence. First stop: ... read more

Tasmania…certainly a picturesque state and my amateur photos do not do God's marvelous works of art justice. Amber and I departed Adelaide on January the 8th to arrive in Hobart, Tasmania for a short holiday. We shared a cab ride to the airport with Jason and Shane, two guys from Melbourne who thought we needed a quick lesson on cricket. They proceeded to tell us about Donald Bradman, a legendary batter equivalent to Babe Ruth, as we drove past the park named after him just outside the city. Just to give you an example of this "no worries" attitude of Australia folks, Shane picked up the cost of our ride to the terminal without hesitation. We spent our first afternoon wandering around Salamanca market, an eclectic shopping district, which gave us an inside look into the ... read more

Hello! A Merry Belated Christmas to you!! And a Happy New Year's!!! I can't believe it's already this time of the year again! Time sure goes by very quickly. Thanks for all of your emails about the tsunami and earthquake and your concern!! Fortunately, I was in the middle of the woods at the end of a 4 day trek in Tasmania when the earthquake happened. I just learned of it yesterday evening and have been watching the news as much as possible. I'm still in shock that it happened in the area that I was just in and that it's nearly anhiliated by this massive movement of the earth's plates. Apparently there are islands that have completely shifted places. I feel very very fortunate to not have been anywhere near that area. I suppose if ... read more

Sunday, 5 September 2004 After getting back from Beechworth I spent two nights in Melbourne before leaving on Sunday morning for a trip to the west of Victoria. Most of the day was taken up driving to Warrnambool. Booked into the City Heart Motel. The room has cable TV and the accommodation is good. Messed around on the computer for a while before ordering a meal from a local restaurant which was delivered just after six o'clock. Watched TV for the rest of the evening. Monday, 6 September 2004 The weather has been good and I hope it stays that way. It was a nine o'clock start. As I walked through the door of the three year old kindergarten, I introduced myself to the two ladies who were in charge of the centre. Didn't get a ... read more

Lisa dropped us off at Coles Bay, to laze on the beach while we tackled the Wineglass Bay Track. The first section, Wineglass Track, was quite steep as it found its way up between the granite boulders and there quite a few people about. I was glad we had food and water. At the top there was a great viewpoint across Wineglass Bay and this a very popular photographed spot. After a few photos we found our way down to Wineglass Beach where had a quick swim and a rest. We then proceeded to Hazards Beach and followd the coastal track. Jenny must have been hungry as she set up like a mountain goat and I had to move quickly to keep up but it was great fun all the same. Its a shame we did ... read more

From Hobart, I was headed back to Melbourne with a flight from Launceston. My plan to see Cradle Mountain fell apart when I realised it was the last weekend of school holidays, and all accomodation there was fully booked. When I had initially arrived on Tasmania it was beautiful weather - and looking out onto the rain swept streets of Hobart I could only visualise sunny Launceston. Even though all the weather reports showed it to be poor weather across the entire island, I had faith that the sun was shining in Launceston - and so bought a ticket back there. For once my instincts were right - I arrived and instantly the slightly depressed feelings that had been welling up in Hobart disappeared. It was great.  Due to the previous weeks bad weather, the gently ... read more

The weather did not improve upon arrival in Hobart, the state capital of Tasmania. The entire time I was there it rained, leaving me feel totally unsure of what to do - I really didn't want to go outside, yet I didn't want to stay in the hostel all day - so I went to my old favourite, another Museum!! It was another good museum, with loads of displays on snakes and spiders, but I've been to far too many - why do they all have free entry?! Hobart itself struck me as a poorer city than those I had already seen. Whether this was due to the fact that there were grey skies and rain rather than sun, I do not know - but the buildingsseemed older and not as well maintained as those inthe other ... read more
