Geo: -31.3612, 138.654We were looking forward to exploring this beautiful area and after a night in the car park just outside of the Wilpena bound road we took a cheeky free shower at the campsite. We then set forth for the Mount Ohlssen Bagge walk which took about 3 hours return up some steep parts for some more amazing views of inside the pound and also Flinders Ranges. Unfortunately the weather was not the best but the views still made up for that. We enjoyed a nice lunch and then made the easier walk downhill. Next stop was the Aboriginal sight called the sacred canyon at the end of a 14km dirt road.It was definitely worth the drive because it was in a small gorge but it also had Aboriginal markings which weren't behind bars.I have ... read more

Geo: -31.3612, 138.654There is something so alluring about the outback, a harsh, rugged and desolate place at times which is also extremely beautiful and amazing. By now the generational gap when it comes to visiting the outback appears. All you see along the roads are campervans and caravans and behind the wheel are two older retiree's in most cases, setting off on their trip around Australia. And the odd family or two, but they appear more frequently in the school holidays. So why is it that you see so little of our age group there? I am not sure but after visiting the Flinders Ranges National Park, we are eager to see the rest of the outback. We set off from Broken Hill to the Remarkable National Park, driving through some deserted and flat land. After ... read more

There are two types of B&B’s in Australia and NZ, those like in the US where the host is on site and prepares a breakfast for all the guests. Where we stayed in Christchurch and in Apollo Bay were of that type. The other is called “self catering” where the proprietor provides the raw food and the guests cook their own breakfast in the kitchen area of their suite. The Buxton Manor in Adelaide was the first self catering B&B of the trip. The fridge contained everything we needed, streaky bacon, eggs, tomatoes, juice, fruit and croissants so we were able to mix and match and make a mostly American breakfast of scrambled eggs, juice and coffee. A quick word about streaky bacon; mostly what we’ve seen here has been more like Canadian bacon with a ... read more

The next day we got up early and set off for Wilpena Pound. This is part of the Flinders Ranges National Park. We arrived in good time for some hiking and did a 7.8km hike around the park. This took us on an easy route to the an old homestead left from the time when they farmed there and then up to Warangga Lookout, a more difficult ascent over quite rocky terrain. My ankle handled this quite well and I was able to do it without too much difficulty. Steph was also struggling with the route, partly due to her slightly swollen ankle, caused by a bite, and predominantly due to the proximity of large spiders. After the walk we decided we had enough time to head back to Port Augusta. Whilst this meant doubling back ... read more

After a few months of planning I am heading up to Parachina to walk the northern most section of the Heysen Trail. I am doing this walk over 4 days with Tim, Mark and Marks dad Kim, the plan was to leave at 5 am on Thursday (14/5) and drive the 5 hours up to the Prairie Hotel at Parachilna where we will be staying, hopefully we will be on the trail to complete the first section to Aroona Ruins by 11am. Well that didnt happen mainly because it took so long to get through Brachina Gorge in my little car that there was no way we could drop the cars in place and finish the walk before dark. So we checked out the trail heads and then headed to the Blinman hotel for a drink ... read more

While the others climbed some mountain somewhere, Jess I and another girl went on to see Wilpena Pound. Definitly worth missing out on climbing the mountain for... not that we have any kind of issue with exercise...... read more

Introduction On the last week in October we indulged in a self-made long weekend in the Flinders Ranges. We took Friday and Monday off and headed to Wilpena Pound. We were based at the Wilpena Resort and had a nice room, albeit short of a few essentials, which were quickly replaced. From here we made several trips - the first BIG day - a walk to Saint Mary Peak, the highest point in the Flinder’s Ranges, and on the second BIG day - a scenic flight around Wilpena pound, a 1-2 hour walk to Arkaroo rock, and short walks through Sacred Canyon and the solar power station at Wilpena. How to get there The trip was around 1000km - a 4-5 hour drive each way. The route map (top left hand corner) will guide you on ... read more
