28th November 2008 - CHAINSAW MASSACRE CAMP!!!
Nat was up at the crack of dawn this moning worrying about being moved on by the council man. I could have slept forever. Was a cold night and I was huddled so tight in the sleeping bag I dreamt about being a pupa and how one day I would turn into a butterfly!!! We had to drive to the nearest petrol station for a wash and teeth clean but soon after we were on the road for what we thought would be a shortish drive. I felt pretty dirty by this point.....no shower for 3 days!!! Even with washing in sinks, fresh clothes and deoderant I still felt grimy. Luckily for us we had decided to stay in a campsite every third night and tonight was night number 3......I couldn't wait to get some clean action!!!
After a couple of navigational errors we managed to make some progress. We passed a few Koala signs but I didn't see a Koala. I so wanted to as well......they look so cute on the signs!!! After just over 2 hours driving we arrived at our planned destination...a green tent spot in Coorang National Park. Only
$5! As we drove up the long gravelly path we realised why. The toilets were literally about 3 miles from the parking bays, there was no electric and all cold showers. After three days without a shower we wanted somewhere a little nicer so we decided to drive a little further.
We looked on the map and saw a caravan park at Policeman's point however when we got closer the caravan symbol had been covered up on the sign!!! Was this all part of the plan to get us to the massacre camp at Salt Creek?!!! The second clue was the policemans car waiting down the road. After we passed it turned and followed us for a while before dropping off.......had he radioed the massacre camp to warn them we were coming and so they had time to hide the bodies? Maybe!!!
We arrived at Salt Creek soon after and followed the sign for the caravan park. At last we had found somewhere!!! The office was deserted (were they out hiding all evidence after the policeman's tip off) and there was a sign on the door for campers to park up.....powered sites $20. We thought that was ok and drove the van into the park. The sign advertised a pool, a kitchen, tennis courts, tv room and we were excited...it had everything apparently!!!
As we went to explore we realised not everything was as it seemed. The whole place was deserted. Lots of rickety buildings spaced out but all empty. Washing hung out and blowing in the wind. Flies buzzing everywhere! Giant fridges dotted about...three in the kitchen and 1 in the TV room....was this where they stored the bodies?!!! Old cobwebs all over the doors and furniture as if the whole place hadn't been used for years!!! It was very eerie and neither of us had a good feeling about it!!!
Nat was hungry so she went to the kitchen to prepare some food whilst I stayed at the van. The owner came whilst Nat was gone and I paid him the fee. He seemed nice and talked about how it was normally busier and a school party had just left!!! No way would there have been cobwebs like that if a school had just been there. Something was not quite right!!! When Nat came back she was also dubious about staying but as I had already paid we felt we should stick it out........until.......we saw how filthy the showers and toilets were. I daren't even hover over them. The pool was as bad...lots of black centipedes swimming about and dotted on the side. No way had this place been used or cleaned in months!!!
We decided to try our luck with the owner to get our money back. We made up a story that we had to meet friends further on and had only just received their call. Luckily he bought it and gave us a full refund!! I hate lying but in this case I think the lie may have saved our lives.....I know it sounds dramatic but it really was like Chainsaw Massacre!! The only thing we didn't hear was the chainsaw!!!
So ironic......we had slept at the side of the road for two days when all we could find were expensive caravan parks and now we wanted a nice caravan park, all we could find were free/cheap campsites and massacre camps!! Typical!!! And I still needed a wash!!!
Eventually we arrived in Kingston and stumbled upon a nice caravan park with actual people in. There were clean showers and it overlooked the sea.....a girl couldn't ask for more!!! After getting parked I went for the ultimate shower experience!! I didn't worry about the amount of shower gel I used...in fact......I lathered up twice!!! It was good!! I thought I was really tanned too until I realised it was just dirt. I stayed under the water for ages until I shone and my hair smelt of cinnaman!!! I then moisturised a clean body instead of just rubbing dirt around like the previous days!!! Amazing!!!
After getting all clean and fresh we headed to the local library which lets you use the internet for free! The library is the way forward over here for internet usage!!! We then had a wonder around town before heading back to the campsite to cook some food and make a brew. Nicest brew ever considering the cold weather!!! Been cold for a couple of days now and considering I only brought 2 pairs of trouses and 4 thin jumpers I needed it to warm up soon!!! Saw some fireworks by the lighthouse and then wrapped up in the sleeping bag again to face another cold night as a pupa!!!
29th November 2008 - LEAVING KINGSTON & LARRY THE LOBSTER
After a cosy night in the van we were up fairly early. Had another amazing shower (you have to make the most of it...next one may not be for a day or two) and then headed out in the van. We were heading to Robe as they had a village fair going on but before we left we visited Kingston's main attraction.......Larry the Lobster!!! Biggest lobster ever!!! We got some exercise by setting timer photos up and then running accross the road to make the shot!! Took a few attempts and managed to avoid getting knocked over by any cars along the way. It was then back on the road and heading for Robe!!
