So.... Stupidly early on Thursday morning we were picked up from our hostel by Tony (who looks like your steroetypical Aussie surfer bloke!) together with 11 other explorers & we headed off to Cape Jervis to catch the ferry over to
KI. Once over there we stopped briefly for supplies (chocolate & ginger beer) before heading to Pennington bay for a brief walk on the beach & a scramble up the rocks. Some even got their feet wet, albeit accidentally! This was the beach Flinders landed on thinking it was mainlamd Australia & the Island is named after the creature that saved his crew from starvation! We next climbed up Prospect Hill (where Flinders found out he wasn't on the mainland) - over 500 steps to the top, there were a lot of red faces at the summit! After this it was off to the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus distillery where they make Eucalyptus & emu oil. Here we also saw an orphaned Tammar Wallaby with his foster mum - he was soooooooo cute!!! We also bought some honey from the endemic Ligurian bees. Then we stopped fort lunch at the Woolshed - an old shearing shed the tour company owns &
View from Prospect Hill
This is the narrowest point of the island. uses as accommodation/base camp. Lunch was a tasty BBQ with fresh salad (all prepared & cooked by us).
After refreshments we headed off to Flinders National Park & the Remarkble Rocks for more rock scrambling & amusing photos 😊 Next stop was Admiral's Arch & the New Zealand fur seal colony, the latter were very smelly!!! We watched the seals & some pups but failed to see sunset through the arch due to some misplaced clouds 😞 After sunset we drove to Vivonne Bay to see some little penguins & heard one calling to his mate - such a pretty song! Then back to the Woolshed for supper of pasta in tomato sauce & a campfire complete with marshmallows, timtams (= penguin bars!) & failed didgeridoo playing! I had great fun sitting next to Tony during the drives in the dark spotting loads of Eastern Kangaroos, Tammar Wallabys & Brush-tailed Possums crossing the road 😊
Up bright & early the next morning to go sandboarding! Luckily Tony was up even earlier cooking us bacon, eggs & pancakes for breakfast! 😊 Whilst we failed to stand up on the boards we both had fun at Little Sahara sledging down the dunes
& I went down forwards a few times - including a running jump onto my belly! That was fun! I also participated in the 'Rolling Down the Hill & Running to Tony' race which I lost by seconds, however I was the only one who didn't cheat & my slowness in running was due to complete disorientation due to dizziness! Next up was a trip to Seal Bay to visit the Australian Sealions - we had a guided tour which took us down onto the beach & up close to the sealions, including a pup suckling. After this it was off to Raptor Domain for a bird of prey show. We met a Tawny Frogmouth, Blue-winged Kookaburra, Australian Krestrel, Boobook owl, Australian Barn Owl, Wedge-tailed Eagle & a Barking Owl. The Kestrel was sooo tiny! Like our own kestrel but in minature! Next came lunch, another BBQ with additional kangaroo this time - it tastes somewhere between lamb & beef & was very chewy.
Next stop was Hanson Bay wildlife park for the Koala sanctuary where we saw several Koalas - mostly not doing very much! & several more Kangaroos. We also tried some 'Bush Bubblegum' - tastes odd &
At the Woolshed
No, that's not where we slept! makes your mouth water loads! We then went to Hanson Bay where we strolled along the cliff tops a short way & I scrambled down one section, climbed along & was pulled back up through a hole in the cliff by Tony - no one else seemed keen to try this though! We failed to see any Hooded Plover, not too surprising as there are only 100-200 left! We then drove to Kingscote to watch the feeding of several Australian Pelicans (& a few cheeky gulls) before supper of (fish &) chips & the ferry back to the mainland. We were dropped off late on Friday night & once again had to put up with the snoring woman in the dorm *grimace*
