Another day in beautiful Fowlers Bay and it was just as spectacular as the previous. I was treated to a 4.5 hour 4x4 tour of the dunes with caravan park managers Brent and Mel and their 7 year old son Zac. Up into the sand hills we sped (literally, its too soft to go slow) and proceeded to follow the coast from the town all the way out to the Point (western headland edge of Fowlers Bay) and then back along the ocean side all the way to Scotts Beach, then home again over the dunes. My big new camera lens was hard at work on the way out as we visited coves that were home to sea lions and then New Zealand fur seals, passing numerous birds and wallabies on the way. Over the other ... read more

Big big driving day today! 740 K's! We started out before 7am and it was still dark. So Rob took a lot of care because animals might be heading home to bed! It was a surreal looking sky (see the photo) with a blanket of black and a red skirt peeping through. Looked magic! The drive was uneventful, I spent most of my time finishing off some knitting projects that I'd started way back in the early days of the trip. Aahh the memories! The Nullarbor is a more interesting drive than you'd probably think. The terrain is constantly changing. In the early part of the day is was flat, flat and more flat, no trees, only tiny little shrubs. Then the hills start to rise up and it becomes tree lined and rocky. Its good ... read more

Fowlers Bay Leaving the Head of Bight after another great day of whale watching, we were still on a high. I now have over 400 photos of whales!(got to love digital!). Turning east on the Eyre Hwy we aimed to camp somewhere off the road after we cleared Yallata Land and found a spot about 20klm before Nundroo Roadhouse which was perfect. That night we celebrated the Southern Right Whales with a good red around the fire. After a leisurely start we turned into Nundroo for a coffee (V ordinary!) and met up with some fellow travellers who had just left Fowlers Bay and asked if we were going in there…”No” was our answer, “although we love the place it was not on our agenda this trip”. “But the whales are in there and for $80 ... read more

What an amazing view, the small town of Fowlers Bay on one side, dwarfed by the massive sandhills on the other and here it is that we set up camp at the Fowlers Bay Caravan Park. We try our hand at fishing off the jetty but there's no fish in the ocean so we resort to just jumping off the jetty before heading back to the park for our first shower in 10 days (but who's counting)! Before packing up we head for a stroll (read as leg killing max heart rate climb) up the dunes, for a spot of early morning photography and sand boarding. Body boards make reasonable sand boards but do suffer some delamination issues! Then the pack-up routine and jump in the old bus to head further west.... read more

After a good nights sleep we woke to a breakfast of pancakes at 7am, then it was time to pack up the van and head over to the dolphin and Sealion swim. The bay where we would be swimming was only a 15 minute drive from camp, so we arrived at around 9am and although it was predicted to be 37 degrees later in the day there was still a chill in the breeze at that time. We changed into our wet suits and all climbed into the little tin boat with Alan, our captain and Mick our deck hand. We were swimming in a bay so it was partially protected from the elements but there was still a large swell in some areas. On the ride out to ... read more
