Nullarbor Plain
Have a look at the morning sky! Very weird! Big big driving day today! 740 K's! We started out before 7am and it was still dark. So Rob took a lot of care because animals might be heading home to bed! It was a surreal looking sky (see the photo) with a blanket of black and a red skirt peeping through. Looked magic!
The drive was uneventful, I spent most of my time finishing off some knitting projects that I'd started way back in the early days of the trip. Aahh the memories!
The Nullarbor is a more interesting drive than you'd probably think. The terrain is constantly changing. In the early part of the day is was flat, flat and more flat, no trees, only tiny little shrubs. Then the hills start to rise up and it becomes tree lined and rocky. Its good to watch!
I had really wanted to go back to Fowlers bay, I'd visited there 5 years ago on a quick trip from Perth with Eden (our son). Unfortunately its 22 k's off the highway on very corrugated roads. But we saw that a bit further east there was another access road and it was sealed! So Rob turned in, I was
Fowlers Bay
Here I am on the sand dunes! so happy! It was only sealed half way but the rest wasn't too bad. So the universe was smiling! Fowlers Bay is a significant historical town, having been settled in the very early days and where Edward Eyre set himself up to explore the Nullarbor. It has a history of whaling and now whales can be seen off the coast heading on their winter journey.
But mostly what appeals are these HUGE HUGE sand dunes. They are brilliant! I did my best to climb to the top, but it seemed particularly steep today! I had to go sideways so I didnt fall backwards! Eventually got there though. Its like a moon scape up there! You would have a ball with a piece of cardboard, flying down the dunes! They are stunning!
Just as I slid my way to the bottom, I saw Rob heading up the other side. He took a few photos and came back down and we headed back onto the highway. Very very happy we were able to make this stopover!
The rest of the trip was uneventful. We were stopped at Ceduna to hand over our fruit and veg! We lost a few
Fowlers Bay
See the beautiful bay bits and pieces but nothing too serious.
Eventually we arrived at a funny old place called Iron Knob, where we have camped for the night. Its a iron ore mine that stopped producing 16 or so years ago and a lot of the town died. Theres a stalwart of residences who are trying to liven up the town and a new mine has reopened albeit only on a moderated short term basis. Its one of those typical sad stories when towns lose their main income source. Still happens today.
Heading into Port Pirie to visit Rob's brother and then Adleaide tomorrow probably for a couple of days. But definitely on the home stretch now...
Raining again tonight but the weather during the day has been lovely, so not so bad (just cold).
Stay warm guys!
