Day 243 - Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges Wakey Wakey it’s Christmas Day! Hurrah, has he been, has Santa been, quick, open the door and have a look…….he’s been, he’s been, he’s brought us our very own stocking! Amazing isn’t it that we’ve travelled half way around this huge country, are the other side of the world from where ‘we should be’ and yet Santa can still track us down, what a guy. Dar has been working hard on the preparations for the dinner. Lots of people have asked us what we’ll be having, why turkey of course with all the trimmings and if it’s 40 degrees outside then so be it! There was a special virtual present to open from my Mum and Dad, bless Mum she’s becoming a whiz with photographs these days! We’re stunned ... read more

Day 242 - Louth Bay to Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges A huge Happy Birthday wish goes out to our beautiful sister-in-law Deb who is celebrating today, hope you have a great day as the Birthday Girl Deb. And a great freqing birthday wish to Mikey of Freq Racing, hoping that one day we'll be lucky enough to race on our birthdays heh Mikey!! Have a great day mate. Before we’d hit the sack last night we chatted to one of our camping neighbours who had been out for a walk with his dog. Beautiful French Bulldog, gorgeous and loved a bit of a fuss - don’t we all! They’re quite gruff looking dogs so we were a bit surprised, but totally delighted to hear his name is Syrup! I know how sweet is that?! Ha ha! ... read more

Our recent trip to Arkaroola included a couple of days at the Mt. Gammon Ranges National Park, located on the southern boundary of the Arkaroola Wildlife Sanctuary. The park has several bush camping areas, and we decided to stay at the site near Grindells Hut because of its proximity to several hiking trails. It is one of the more isolated camping areas, and we had to traverse a 17 km 4wd road to access the camping area. There is a Hut, that can be rented from the Park Services, but we stayed down among the river gums. Finding the ideal site was a bit tricky, because you don't want to put your tent under the large trees, as they are known to drop heavy branches without warning. Fortunately, we arrived early and were able to find ... read more

We have blown our accommodation budget here in Hawker, staying in the Big4 Caravan Park (Hawker Caravan Park), but have enjoyed the time of rest. The kids have been focused on their project and math books and enjoy dipping in the pool and playing in the playground (especially Cody, who is addicted to slides). We were unsure as to whether to tour the Flinders at the start of our trip or at the end, and figured that there is no time like the present. We were concerned that after seeing the wonders of the Alice and the Pilbara we would figure nothing else would compare and would skip it in favour of a quicker return home. We are so glad we decided to see this land now, as we have really enjoyed seeing it and spending ... read more

Got picked up at the very early time of 6.10am and left Adelaide for the start of our 6-day Adventure Tours tour Adelaide to Alice Springs. We drove a LOT on this trip, some days covering 700km, with nothing inbetween. After a lot of driving and a few stops we arrived at the small town of Quorn which was to be our base for 2 nights. We were staying in an old mill. That afternoon we did a 3 hour, 9km hike to the top of a mountain called Dutchman's Stern. That was a hard walk, but the views were absolutely stunning! The shapes of the hills and just the view of the nothingness out there was great. Had Emu, Camel and Kangeroo for tea! The next day we went to Wilpena Pound, a huge natural ... read more

The time came for me to head off Friday afternoon not soon enough - I have been awaiting and saving for this trip for the past 6 weeks, having arranged it all in June one wet depressing Mt Gambier day! After a quick taxi ride to the airport, I flew out on the 12.45pm flight to Adelaide on REX, regional express airways. They hold a monolpoly at Mt Gambier, so it's REX or a long walk/ drive/ expensive bus ride from the big smoke. Adelaide airport was warm and dry, a stark cry from the forecast wet and windy given 30 minutes prior to landing by the pilot - surely they have first hand knowledge as to the clouds movements??!! I cleared luggage in 10 minutes and headed out to find the bus station into town. ... read more

Flinders Ranges We started in the southern prt of the Flinders, camping at Mambray Creek National Park. It was beautiful there, but cold. We lit a fire and had dinner by firelight - fantastic. We had a cosy night (with thermals!) sleeping in the car. A good test for my newly made curtains which fitted a treat! The next day we went walking around Alligator Gorge. It was along walk through a very rough track, but we saw wild roos which was great. Next, we went further north to Wilpena Pound in the northern Flinders. On the way we played animal ambulance, as we took an orphaned joey, which had been left at the information site after someone had run over its mother, 150kms to a lady who rescues baby roos. I had to cuddle it ... read more

On Thursday morning, we departed Whyalla quite late, making a brief stop at Fitzgerald Bay Conservation Reserve . We passed the southern end of the Stuart Highway as we drove into Port Augusta and for just a fleeting moment Alex and I looked at one another and wondered whether we should make a left turn and head back home. But we continued on to Port Augusta and stopped for lunch (barbecued sausages) at a nice picnic area/playground overlooking the river. It was very warm and we were tempted to join the locals for a swim, but changed our minds when we felt the water temperature. We arrived at Wilpena in the Flinders Ranges around 5pm, but decided we'd head further into the park to stay at a park camp ground for a few nights rather than ... read more

22 May - after completing the Oodnadatta Track, we were back on the bitumen again - but not for long! After a night at Copley, where we washed a large load of dusty clothes and cleaned up the worst of the Oodna dust from the caravan, we headed onto another gravel road (about 130km) to Arkaroola in the northern Flinders Ranges. Arkaroola is an awe-inspiring place, it was an outback station until Reg and Griselda Sprigg purchased it in 1968 and turned it into a wilderness sanctuary. Reg was a world-renowned geologist and a leader in mineral exploration and oceanographic research and the property is one of Australia’s most ancient landscapes with granite rock dated at 1.6 billion years. We spent our first afternoon exploring some of the 4WD tracks set out for visitors to look ... read more
