15th September 2012 (towards the Eyre Peninsula) We left Adelaide just before 9am and headed north towards Port Germain. We camped in the Germain Gorge free camp area, which is a nice quiet spot. We saw two snakes on the road and three blue tongued lizards (two on the road, one near camp). There are quite a few birds here too. We took a scenic drive through the gorge to Murray Town, a historic old town. The old stone cottages on the fields are very scenic, especially with the canola in flower. In the evening we listed to Collingwood defeat the Eagles on the radio while we played cards. 16th September 2012 It was an almost clear blue morning, and we saw a roo near the campsite and a large flock of emus not far down ... read more

Moving on… Port Broughton is an old favourite, and we felt we were in familiar surrounds when we arrived at the caravan park. The trip westward across Yorke Peninsula was short (about 120 kms), but it was enough to give Geoff apoplexy – 24.8 lts/100kms was the best we could do against the wind (read - cyclone). Thankfully the wind abated (mostly) and it was relatively pleasant on the west coast. Geoff and Marg got the fishing gear out and walked down to the local pier to catch a feed for dinner… it was a good thing that we emptied the wallet at the Port Victoria fish shop, as the fish were not biting where Geoff and Marg were. They were biting 50 metres closer to the beach from where G had picked, but what a ... read more

Geo: -32.1261, 133.675Todays Challenge - To spot the elusive Nullarbor Tree (carried over from Day 17)Up at 6.00am we have had a good sleep but decide to leave a little later as the sun is right in our eyes. They say never drive the Nullarbor from East to West because of the setting sun but Rod thinks it is much worse from West to East (depends if you are an early riser). We will have to leave one hour later each morning. We depart at 7.45 and the odometer trip meter ticks over to 7000 km just outside of Madura. We are getting hungry having missed breakfast so we pull into the Mundarabilla Roadhouse and order a bacon and egg roll. It was very tasty and far better than the egg and bacon McMuffins at McDonalds. There ... read more

CEDUNA TO ADELAIDE VIA EYRE PENINSULA After filling up at Ceduna and establishing that many of the campsites were busy and had time before dark, we thought we would push on to SMOKEY BAY, a holiday town of around 200 souls. Arriving there just before dark, the proprietor of the sole campsite only had one noisy pitch left next to the camp kitchen, but he allowed our little tent to go into corner of the site not designated as a pitch on his site map – at the price of a powered pitch of course. Too late to move on, we accepted his “offer”. The site had a reasonably nice camp kitchen, where we cooked our meal, but soon raced to our tent to shelter from the mosquitoes which we discovered had just feasted on ... read more

Geo: -32.1261, 133.675Today's Challenge - To abide by the mandatory Nullarbor protocol of the one finger steering wheel wave.Depart Ceduna at 7.00am being first light. With some anticipation we are not sure what we have gotten ourselves into today.Arrive at the first town on the Nullarbor; Penong. It is big enough to justify a 60kph speed limit, but not big enough for a Chinese restaurant. Their biggest industry seems to be windmill blowing. We pass the last shop for 1,000 km.Getting windy. Sit up straighter as though this will balance the car better. As we pass through Nundoo, we decide not to stay here on our return. The odometer hits 3000 km. just outside of Yalata. Deb spots a huge eagle sitting on the side of the road. We start to wonder why everybody says this is ... read more

Elliston Sat 24 Mar - just a short drive today - 101klms - The Elliston caravan park is a lovely little caravan park (owner manager - when ever the owner is the manager we have found the park is run very well and this was no exception). We had planned to only stay over night but it was so nice we stayed an extra day. Did the Little Bay Cliff Top Drive and saw some amazing scenery over the cliff's and ocean. The next day we went for the Anxious Bay Clifftop drive and again saw some more amazing scenery. Again it was hard to just add a few photos of these drives (sorry there is so many but it was all just so beautiful). We were watching some surfers out in the ocean and then ... read more

Hi Guys, We come to you today from the lovely Venus Bay South Australia. We have been here since last Wednesday. Fortunately the weather has been a lot kinder than what you have copped in Vic. We were on the tail end of the cloud mass and received very little rain although it was blowing a gale for three days. The weather for the next week is fine, fine and fine high 20's each day. We have been making good use of the communal boat (thanks guys)and fishing regularly with Deb bagging her first whiting. We also had a great session at Mt. Camel beach on the salmon. We depart here Wednesday for Baird Bay not much futher down the coast. There is a Sea Lion colony within easy reach with the little boat and also a resident ... read more

From Baird Bay we took the inland dirt roads via Point Labatt and Sceale Bay to our destination of Streaky Bay. Point Labatt Conservation Park is located on the Calca Peninsular on the Great Australian Bight. It lies along a spectacular stretch of SA west coast where rugged limestone cliffs show the constant attack of the Sthn Ocean. Rounded granite boulders form off shore reefs that protect a small headland where rock pools and a shady beach provide an ideal home and environment for some very special Australians - Australian Sea Lions. There is only one species of seal that lives in Australia and there are only a few places in Australia where these seals live and breed. Point Labatt is the only place on the mainland where seal pups can be seen to play, growing ... read more

On leaving Elliston we headed north to the historic town of Colton, an old pioneer town complete with a hotel, church, school and cemetery, all only empty buildings today except for the schoolhouse. The cemetery is the burial site of the first Greek settler to SA, George Tramountanas, who arrived in SA in 1822 at the age of 20. One thing not to be missed in Colton is the Bakery !!!! Call in when you see the open sign to purchase wood fired bread via a self serve Shop (shelter) and an honesty pay system. Bread and buns are baked in the wood fired oven bakehouse next to the old Colton school, now a private residence. Trish and I brought a beautiful cob loaf and a pack of 4 sweet sticky buns. Everything was $3.50 each/pack. ... read more
