Saturday and it's RACEDAY. Macca's office is closed but it doesn't mean that we can't still enjoy a bit of giddy-up at the track.
Lucky we made it though because these wearied travellers did not stir until after 9 am! What a sleep in. Think Mac will revert to his old habits as soon as we get home! And the late start is not the only difference, Breakfast was minimalist. I managed to find an apple on the run and Mac called in to Hudsons Coffee for a flat white and a muffin.
But we were out and about and looking for the tram around midday. Stopped off at Haigh's chocolate shop and indulged in a carefully selected purchase of 6 little squares that set us back $13.20! Must be top shelf!
Secured an all day tram pass and headed out to Morphettville. And we were not alone. The tram was packed with race goers all dressed to the nines. It was the Goodwood Stakes Day and hats and fascinators, coloured suits and high heels were the norm for the day. Mac was resplendent in his new Ghan collared shirt and I was proudly sporting my new kangaroo-hide Jacaru but we did
have the feeling we were slightly underdone.
Loved the track. Green all round. Beautiful gardens and flowers. Great views from alongside the track, the stalls, the parade and presentation rings and the stands. Had one omen bet for the day "Joyful Journey", which did nothing for us. Mac was happy to see one of the horses he follows Flamberge, up close and personal, but it did nothing for us either. And his special at Melbourne, Demonstrate, provided the same non result. The true omen bet of the day was Murder of Crows on the Gold Coast and we missed it!
Didn't matter, sure the $10 win from the pokies last night had us covered. Well, at least it was a start.
We joined the tram again and headed for Glenelg for the sunset - actually left before the last race to ensure we had plenty of time to catch the best views of the sun setting over the ocean. Had a wander and a look and then settled in for a coffee and added the million dollar chocolates to the menu.
Not sure how it happened, but when we emerged from the coffee shop it was dark. Mac called on Siri for an
update on the sunset and somehow we had missed it by 15 minutes. We sprinted (use your imagination on what that might look like) towards the jetty and did capture some "after glow" and pretended it didn't really matter. Looks like we will have to visit Adelaide again for a rerun.
Back on the tram for the 40 minute return journey and a definite down market dinner was on the cards. Grabbed a box from WokInaBox in Hindley and devoured it in our room served on saucers using plastic spoons and sipping ginger ale and juice from the bottle.
Think we are ready for the return home tomorrow.
PS Feeling a little underdone in the dress stakes all round. There was a dress code for the Mayfair.
From their handbook: Guests are discouraged from wearing tank tops, shorts, swimwear, baseball caps, sportswear, flip flops, sports shoes and other similar apparel. The dress code for Hennessy Lounge on Friday and Saturday nights is business or cocktail attire."
Oops. We're definitely not qualifiers!
