Hahndorf
Heather and other Exchangees Well after another Fabulous Friday, this seems to be the trend and I suppose I am thankful at least it’s the last day of the week, Teresa and I head to the Adelaide Central market. This is a place where your senses are on fire! The smells, the sounds, the tastes, and sights are what some people would consider overwhelming, but for me it is a buzz and makes me feel lively. We met V & G and their daughter for dinner in the Asian cafeteria. Although dinner was satisfying, it just wasn’t enough and I suggested a flashback to my summer! Cheese, sundried tomatoes, olives and a bottle of wine all in tow only after harassing a customer in the wine store and all in good fun. Love the Aussie wit and sense of humour. Great end to an evening and I needed to get home for a busy Saturday ahead.
Rise and shine and we are off, not to the races, but to the wineries, yet again. Gotta love this lifestyle lol. Heather, after knocking on the wrong door, finally found me and we headed to Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills to meet some of the other exchangees.
(What is really odd I have found so far is that a lot of the new friends I have met here have the same if not similar names to my friends at home, weird.) This is a surviving German settlement nestled in the hills and it is super cute, I can’t wait to further explore it. We met the other exchangees for lunch at K2C, which was absolutely delicious. The next stop was to grab a German pint where conversations were had about similarities and differences between many different countries that were around the table and a cultural education. We also discovered that good old Siri could have different accents.
From here we headed to the Rock Bare cellar door to sample a few wines and then headed further into the hills to Heather’s boyfriend Craig’s friend’s winery. This was by far the best experience I have had yet at a winery. It was in the backyard of his house with his family there and they served us wines as well as cheese and crackers. He is from Argentina, fell in love with an Aussie, and is now making wine. It was such a heartwarming experience with a great
education and it actually reminded me very much of my time in Colombia with Carlos and Kelly. Such a great afternoon!
Sunday proved to be another new experience at Moana Beach, which you can drive on. Simon and Kym invited me, along with their family and friends, to a breakfast BBQ on the beach. What a fun way to spend the morning meeting new people and having proper egg muffins. Thanks to Simon the BBQ cooking was a smooth operation and very tasty!
Well the time of the month that everyone has been waiting for and raving about, The Fringe, has finally arrived. Friday the 13 we head into the Croquet Club. thanks to Jane and her ride, to take part in the opening festivities with a little food, drink, music and parade. So we thought, we accomplished most of the above, other than the whole reason we went, the parade. The atmosphere was great at the Croquet Club and very unique things going on. The one side was lined with pop up bars and restaurants, a stage with DJ’s playing-Dr. Snuff (I think) was who we were waiting for and then the other side was lined with
speakers, random sculptures, and washing machines. It was a great night with Lisa, Jane, Teresa, V & G, Derry, Heather, and two other exchange's. Although we did miss the parade, we danced into the night and then headed home to crash at Teresa’s.
Saturday was spent at the outlet mall called Harbour Town out by the airport. We also discovered the pathetic, yet hilarious, horn on my car that brings an instant smile and laughter to everyone. She is now known as the Road Runner-beep beep. You can barely hear it in the car with the radio off, let alone anywhere else! Teresa, Lisa and I celebrated Valentine’s Day at Burnelli’s for dinner and to the Nova theatre for the long awaited and very disappointing 50 Shades of Grey. It was entertaining to say the least, but a great night with the single ladies, all the single ladies! I headed home for a quick sleep only to head to another adventure Sunday morning.
I picked Teresa up at 7 am to head to V & G’s as we had been invited to go on G’s father’s boat to do some crabbing. We had all our gear
in tow and headed to Largs Bay. We boarded the boat along with G’s parents and his daughter and her friend. The hospitality and generosity of his parents was unreal. We had homemade breakfast on the boat and the crabbing began. Chickens and lamb bits were attached to the crab nets and overboard they went. Maggots, also called gents were put on the fish hooks and the fishing began as well as the squid lines. One thing was for sure we weren’t going home with an empty esky. It was great fun pulling up the nests and measuring the clambering and clattering blue crabs and listening for the trumpet fish, “And the trumpets go…” After a few hours, and a dozen crabs later, we sailed back to the marina where I was lucky enough to witness a dolphin swimming beside the boat oh and I also saw a really large blue jelly fish. What a great morning and again just another example of how people have been overly generous, welcoming, and I am so grateful for all of my inclusions and experiences.
We headed back to G’s parents where I learned to crack crabs and what a delicious treat
that was. I also got a lesson in how to clean the crabs. We left and headed home where I had just enough time to shower and head to Kevin and Kelly’s in McLaren Vale for another delicious home cooked meal and great visit. Kevin was kind enough to check my oil and clean out my window wiper sprayers. I left them with a little taste of the Road Runner-beep beep, and was on my way. It was a jam packed weekend with tonnes of activity, great times and very little sleep. There’s always next weekend for time to catch up on sleep. So I thought.
