YHAYHAYHA

Welcome to the Adelaide YHA.
We arrived bright and early to Adelaide that Tuesday morning. Unfortunately, a little too early for check in. But most hostels are used to it, and many have of them have free bag storage. We got rid of our stuff, and chilled out in the common room for a bit. Another great thing about YHAs, is that most of them host daily activities to help make people feel more welcome, and Tuesday just happened to be free breakfast pancakes! Talk about luck!

Around the noon hour we explored the city and tried to get a feeling for where everything was. Personally, I hate the uncomfortable feeling of not knowing where I am, so exploring and figuring out where things are helps ease that feeling. After lunch we dropped by the cinema for a cheap movie. This time we chose Moon. We both really enjoyed it. It’s a movie about a guy working on the moon in the future, harvesting energy for the Earth. He’s been working all alone, and is nearing the end of his 3-year contract, but has started losing his mind. Pretty cool.

Wednesday we planned our trips for the next couple of weeks. We decided we’d

go to Kangaroo Island on a 3-day tour, and then take another 3-day tour along the Great Ocean Road to get to Melbourne. It was a lot of money to fork over all at once, but it was nice to have it all planned so we wouldn’t miss anything. That afternoon we went on a tour of the South Australia parliament buildings. We got to see the chamber for the House of Representatives and the chamber for the Senate, along with getting a bit of history. Next we dropped by the Botanic Gardens. We’d been to quite a few gardens so far in Australia, and all of them have been great (and huge). Having such a big green area right there in the city always makes for a nice change in scenery. They even had this huge building that looked a lot like the end of a flying saucer which had had a crash landing. Lol

Thursday we checked out the city’s green surroundings. Adelaide’s an interesting city because of its design. It’s a grid based city, which is surrounded by a huge continuous park system, making it seem like a concrete island in a forest. Some of the

parks are landscaped, and some are left to develop naturally. An interesting concept. That night we made sure to get a good night’s sleep because as usual, we needed to get up early for another tour. This time to Kangaroo Island!

Hmmm... Considering this is now the middle of October, I think this poster's a bit past due.

Here's the original design for the Parliament House. It started in 1889, and got halfway finished before running out of money. The clock tower design was then scrapped, and the second half was completed in 1939 thanks to a huge donation.
