A coolish morning ( relatively speaking) . The staff have jumpers on. We had breakfast, paid our drinks tab and then watched Gary put out feed for the birds. 4 Brolgas came in, a whistling kite and a kingfisher. We said our goodbyes and set off. Our first stop was Musgrave. the site of an Old Telegraph Station. The only one that has been preserved. Gravel road to Coen - good condition as it had just been graded. Many sections are sealed. We went over the Great Dividing range, 3620 kms long. We passed some dams that had been built by the Roads Dept to be used for grading and ultimately bitumen. Stopped at Coen for morning tea and visited the local museum. 3G available so caught up on news. Archer roadhouse built in 1983 in ... read more

Hi all, we woke up at Weipa. I was thinking this might be a quiet day. Well I was wrong. First we decided we would go on a tour of the Rio Tinto mine. Booked for the 8.30 tour which takes 2.30hrs. Well to my surprise Ken and Maureen were on the same tour. Ken was my old boss over 10 years ago. I knew they were coming up here but for us to meet on the same tour was unbelievable. The trip on the bus to the inside of the mine was incredible. There are some pictures attached. They are mining Bauxite in open cut fashion and the miners are all residential and live in Weipa. After the mine we went to the local bread shop and had a quick lunch there. The only two ... read more

Hi all, today is Saturday and we packed up from Mutee Heads to head back towards Weipa. This is the start of our journey back to Melbourne but we still have a week left us here so we will spend a couple of nights at Weipa and then travel down South and stay 3 nights at Port Douglas. before we left Xavier, Matthew and Mason went for one last fish on the Tinny at 6 am. They came back smiling as they caught two big Queen Fish. It is important at this point for me to highlight that both fish were not as big as the one I caught. I still hold the record for the largest fish caught by our group for the whole holiday period. I make sure I remind them all every chance ... read more

Cape York Friday 22nd May Today started with some fishing again. My grandson Cohen caught a beautiful salmon. The one and only for the trip so far. Very proud boy he was. Mid morning, Xavier and Tracey went out on the little tinny we have and the rest went exploring the coast with the four wheel drives. We were in walkie talkie communication with Tracey. She ended up catching 2 mackerel and Xavier caught none. While he was fishing we ended up finding a secluded camp spot that had a set of swings and tables and chairs made of the timber surrounds. Also found a washed up fishing net floater the size of my car. Matthew dragged it behind his ute back to our camp. With this being our third full day my batteries are starting ... read more

Cape york Thursday 21st May I woke up at 6am and Matthew was already fishing. He had already caught a Queen fish. As we were fishing we saw two sharks come up right to the shore. The one I saw was at least two metres long. A Little bit of fishing for the morning. The kids are having a ball particularly with the fishing. The kids put together a floating raft made of driftwood and old thongs/flip flops and put a plastic sail on a couple of pieces of timber. We all wrote our names and put a message in a bottle. We let the sail go and the wind did the rest. Let's see if we get a response from the other end of the Asian world. The middle of the day was extremely hot ... read more

Thursday 21st June The plan was to make Musgrave Station on this day but again car trouble plagued us, thankfully we became aware of the trouble in Coen and we made repairs there but things could have been much worse if we had been on the track to Normanton as we had intended. We noticed oil coming out of the left hand front wheel hub and suspected a wheel bearing, we parked under a tree at the camp ground behind the Exchange Hotel to inspect the problem, unfortunately the bearing had collapsed completely and needed some serious equipment to effect a repair. The local mechanic was a nice guy who told us he could do the job the next day and was even kind enough to lend me some tools initially to see if I could ... read more

1-8-11 Happy Birthday Dennis. We packed up & stored the van at Lakeland & took off to Cooktown. Cooktown is an old town which is spread out; we stocked up on a few essentials & had a look around at the Wharf & Beach. We then had the best fish & chips for lunch. We took off on the Battle Creek Road, all dirt & river crossings. We stopped at Isabella Falls & Normanby River, before heading to Laura for the night. It’s just a campground with toilets & showers $20 a night. 2-8-11 From Laura we stopped at Hann River Roadhouse, where there was a pink & blue chook & lots of birds. We then stopped at Musgrave, Coen & then onto Archer River Roadhouse, $20 a night & a nice grassy area to ... read more

Tuesday 19th July 2011 Weipa Rest Day Today we’ve been for a drive around the “suburbs” of Weipa. It is a strangely spread out town, as if when they designed it they said “Here we shall be the dwellings, here the business centre, and here the industrial area, none too close to the other” and then over the years the bits in between have been filled in higgledy piggledy. We drove out to the long one-lane bridge out to the mining area. It is give way to traffic already on the bridge, with a bay in the middle where a vehicle can pull over to let another past. There are huge speed humps at either end made of layers of old mine truck tyres, to slow traffic down on the approaches – it works! We drove ... read more
