This stay in Taroom has resulted in our first exchange of details with other people…. I feel accepted into the nomad lifestyle… people want to keep in contact with us! Go team! Ryan had to hand out a business card, so I think I might get some cards done with our contact details… I think you can get free ones from Snap Printing, something else to put on my must be done list. When we arrived in Taroom this time there was a family camping under a big tree in the park. I happened to speak to the dad that night, as he wanted to warn us about a broken cattle grid on a local road, because it had blown a tyre on their trailer. I spoke to him and the rest of his family (wife ... read more

We've returned to Taroom, so that I can sit my end of semester exams for uni. I miss the weir, I'd happily return to bathing in cold water in the great outdoors to be back at the weir. It was just easier. The dogs didn't bark as much and could have freedom, Noah could have a bit more freedom and it was just tranquil. The packing up / setting up process seems to be becoming more fine tuned and we all seem less stressed by the end of it. Saturdays move didn't result in a tantrum throwing toddler, even though he only managed about 45mins of sleep for the entire day! Oh how I miss the days of two sleeps. Sunday dawned and marked the 1st year of wedded bliss. I was unprepared and skipped out ... read more

Wow, it's Friday already, how time flies when your relaxing with nothing to do. Wednesday I had my first go at the Hobie kayak. What great fun! Instead of paddling (which you can do if you choose) you peddle and the fins underneath the kayak push you along. I gave fishing a shot and while I didn't fall in, I did manage to jam the reel with the line and put an end to my fishing efforts after about 5 casts. After 4 days of enjoying the weir to ourselves, another caravan rocked up on Thursday afternoon. This has annoyed the dogs no end, as they are now confined to their pen unless on lead... even more annoying for them is that 2 dogs turned up with them. It has also put a stop to us ... read more

For $7.00 a night this place is a bargain... ok so a frog jumped out of the toilet after I flushed it yesterday... but we have power and there is no one else here and the peace is just wonderful and we have phone / internet reception! Ryan got up early and took photos, Noah and I happily slept in. The dogs are not quite sure what to do with themselves, so much space and water to cool off in. Neither of them venture in beyond chest depth, but they have been tested and both are able to swim without life jackets, so there is no fear of them drowning. Noah enjoyed his first swim with his dad today. Bit sad that we haven't had him in a pool prior to this, but to say he ... read more

Another day of pack up and set up. This time our destination was the Glebe Weir. This place is lovely, about 26kms off the highway and at this point in time completely deserted. There is plenty of water in the weir, but no drinking water supply, so basically we're here until our water runs out. We're bathing in water from the weir and keeping the tank water for drinking and washing up dishes. Due to the seclusion and non-existent neighbours we're going to let the dogs pretty much do what they please during the day and pen them at night. They have been rather cooped up the last few weeks, so I think they'll enjoy the freedom! Noah has been exploring already and discovered a game of bush skittles, but I've decided that showing him how ... read more

Mum and Dad stayed for two nights before heading off this morning. We won't catch them (or them us) again, as we won't be heading in the same direction now, they are on their way to Mt Isa. I think they enjoyed the extra time they had with Noah... especially since I palmed him onto them for a few hours yesterday while I studied. Noah has had a few more run-ins with things recently and is now sporting a faint black eye and bruised cheek... he has a habit of hitting things with his head. I get the feeling we will be forever telling him to look where he is walking / running. The weather continues to be hot here, but it cools down at night so there is at least some small relief. My thong ... read more

Today to give Ryan some peace and quiet while he worked (something we are not getting tonight while trying to sleep thanks to the locals having a party involving a combo of loud techno and country music) I took Noah and the dogs for a short stroll down to the Dawson River, which is not far from the caravan park. After the dogs had a little splash in the creek, we headed back to the van to drop off the dogs (it is quite hot and a short walk was more than enough for them) and Noah and I continued into Taroom town centre via the river walk... fancy name for a dirt walking track :) There's quite a bit of history in Taroom and it was interesting reading the signs about Leichhardt and the region ... read more

Did you know today was Melbourne Cup? I didn't realise until we'd turned the TV on about 10 mins before the race started. That isn't too surprising considering I wasn't aware that today was the 1st of November... my first uni exam is only 13 days away... gulp! We left Wandoan this morning and I think we're getting better at the packing up. Doing some of the pack the day before makes things move much quicker. It was stress-free and much happier all round. First for today - the caravan toilet had to be emptied. That is all that needs to be said. Has anyone driven on the Leichhardt Hwy before? For a road that is considered a major route... it's crap! The edges are all broken and it is so bumpy. Even worse is all ... read more

It's hot. Ryan tells me it is only going to get hotter... which is fine if we're in places where we can hook into power and run the air con, but it's going to rather horrid if we're free camping. I didn't get to do any exploring of Wandoan. The mornings have been spent washing (finally finished it all today) and the middle of the day is far to hot to be wandering around in. We went on a trip yesterday to check out a campsite about 50kms north of Taroom (a town around 55kms north of Wandoan). After our effort in Bell, we wanted to be sure that there was internet coverage. It is a lovely lovely spot and we are moving on there next week... it is beside the Glebe Weir and for $7.00 ... read more

For three people, we produce a mountain of washing. I know my little twin tub only does small loads (2 kg), but I've done 8 loads in the last two days and I'm still not finished! I'm going to have to consider wearing shorts more than once before washing them and Noah is going to have to eat food in just a nappy to save on clothing changes. Ryan goes through a surprisingly small amount of clothes, he must already engage in caravan wearing practices. While doing the washing today I wondered if you can spend too much time in caravan parks... or is there a point you start to act like redneck americans we all laugh at and call trailer trash. What made me wonder this? A few things... * Noah wandering around the caravan ... read more
