21.1.12 Had an hour on the beach before it started raining. We had a walk around the shops, bought some sunglasses for me as Sophie sat on my other ones. There was lots of shops and malls that Sophie could have walked around all day but we had to head back to meet Gaz Little as he had come down from Brisbane for the Big Day Out. We met him and decided to go segway racing. We thought it would be loads of fun but turned up and they were so slow and had to keep your distance from the next driver! We decided to leave it and go on a ride called the Vominator. It was one of those rides that spun you round and round really high up in the air. We then headed ... read more

18.1.12 Bus to Surfers Paradise, our first impresions were totally different to that of Byron Bay. There was high risers for a start, which was a shock. It was like a small city. The hostel was nice but as we were staying for 5 nights we got put into the workers dorms. It was right on the beach and there was a small pool aswell. There was a backpackers night out organised which we decided to go on. It was $30 and you got entry to 4 bars and a free drink. We had a good night and got to know a lot of people in the hostel. We decided that the spirits were watered down as we were near enough sober on the walk home. 19.1.12 Hooray its sunny! We took full advantage of this ... read more

Today we were going to check out a theme park. You know, I've said before you can take the girl out of the theme park company but you can't take the company out of the girl? Well here on the Gold Coast you've got a selection of theme parks to tickle your taste buds. From water parks to Warner Bros movie world, you've got something for everyone. Today was meant to be the day I got to try them out. You'll have got the hint from that sentence that all didn't go to plan. Correct. The weather let me down in terms of attendance at the water park(s). Cloudy and windy. Not good. I'd heard Dreamworld looked tired and outdated. Less good. So Warner Bros world it would need to be. Except....$80...each...for the day. The equivalent ... read more

What better way to spend a mid-December day than walking the full length of the beach from Mariners to Surfers, into a headwind but in broad sunshine? Emma's idea and it was brilliant - took us about 40 minutes but the views were beautiful - stunning waves crashing onto the shore as families enjoyed paddling and the seriously keen surfers and kite surfers showed off their talents in the deeper water. Once at Surfers, it all came flooding back - this place is full of high rise apartment and hotel blocks, all with gorgeous views of the ocean, but it's really like Torremolinos, just in Australia. There's a hell of a lot of money kicking about, which might just set it apart from its Costa cousin, but in essence it's a big holiday resort. We kicked ... read more

So my Surfers Paradise experience was probably different to that of many others, as I was actually picked up from Surfers bus terminal but quickly whisked away to a place just south of the main built up "city" which is called Surfers Paradise. To be honest as we drove though the city and along the beach, there were actually not that many surfers there so this is all a myth. On the other hand i didn't stop for long enough to watch them as i was whisked away as i said to my friend Traceys house down by the lovely waterways, or so i called it the Miami Vice area south of the town. It felt like this as each house had a jetty outside at the back of the house and many had their own ... read more

Day 26, 07/10/11 Was up at 7:30am again today and straight on the 9am bus to Sea World. Weather was brilliant today so we slapped on the sun cream and headed for the rides, shows and animals. Managed to do everything, same as yesterday. Highlights were the Jet Rescue Ride - a very fast rollercoaster and the Dolphin & Sea Lion Shows. In the evening I finished the bag of pasta with some chicken for dinner and then packed ready to move on tomorrow.... read more

Day 24, 05/10/11 Was up early this morning to get the 7:45am bus to Surfers Paradise. Bus was 45mins late so finally got on it at 8:30am and arrived at Surfers Paradise an hour and a half later. As I had moved into Queensland I had to put my clock back an hour making the time difference back to 9 hours ahead of the UK. Hostel is tiny but very nice. I met up with a friend who I met at Surf Camp and we headed into town to book the Theme Parks and my next Greyhound trip up to Noosa. Had pasta for dinner and spent the evening playing cards with people at the hostel Day 25, 06/10/11 Got up at 7:30am today as we were heading to Warner Bros World Theme Park with a ... read more

Today started with sleeping in, which was a very welcome change. We caught a flight around noon from Cairns to Gold Coast. We have come to loath the Australian airlines and they have luggage requirements that are crazy as well as ridiculously expensive. So upon arrival to the counter, Kirsten instructed Chester to hide our backpacks as these along with our small roller carry-ons would put us over the weight limit and at $15/KG that can add up. All was looking good until Kirsten’s roller back was 3 KG over weight. So we had to get all of our bags and reorganize them to add more to the checked luggage and pay the difference. At this point we are not happy campers. We get everything switched around and had to throw out some stuff, like a ... read more

We decided this year that instead of our annual pilgrimage to Cairns to visit my Dad we'd get them to meet us on the GoldCoast. Hubby had never been there before and last time i went when i was 18 and we throught the Midgit would love the theme parks (and us!) so we'd give it a go...plus its way cheaper to get from Perth to Brisbane than to go to Cairns. We had a 3 bedroom apartment in the Towers of Chevron which was a fantastic location. Less than 5 minutes from the main mall, 5 minutes from the beach and underneath was a Coles, Liquorland and heaps of very cheap cafes! $4 for a huge cooked breakfast!!!! The apartment was very nice and very clean with amazing views and very sound proof which was ... read more

I left Byron Bay today and decided to take an adventure to Mt Tamborine however my new GPS decided not to work again. It did this to me on my first day to the Grampians so I had to detour on my 3rd day to Bendigo to rectify the situation. Instead of making it to my planned destination today, I arrived here in Burleigh Heads to again fix the GPS. My drive took me through the townships of Tweed Heads, Coolangatta, Palm Beach and finally Burleigh. This relatively short drive from Byron, taking 2.5hrs, including time spent lost and searching for a shopping centre, was nice enough, however much of the north coast of NSW and south coast of QLD are rife with towns, barely further than 15km apart, so it felt alot like driving through ... read more
