Waiting until September for my birthday is usually pretty rough, but this past weekend made it all worth it!!! A bunch of my friends and I took a train to the Gold Coast early Saturday morning (9/15/12) to celebrate my birthday! We spent most of the day on the beach and found a fun restaurant in the evening to have my birthday dinner. At night, we met up with an American boy who was also studying abroad that one of the girls in my group knew from high school. He has an apartment right on the beach with an amazing view of the city and let us come over before we went out. He and his friends showed us all the fun clubs to go to and it was such a blast. It was coincidentally his ... read more

It had been a few years since Hannah and I had been to the Gold Coast so we decided to book a few days in Surfers Paradise then meet up with some friends in Brisbane while we were in the area. We arrived into Brisbane airport mid-morning then took the air train and a cab to get to Surfers Paradise where we were staying at the impressive Hilton Hotel. Most of our break away was spent either lying by the beach or by the hotel pool, however we did manage to visit the observation deck of Q1. We had been there before, but the views from one of the tallest buildings in Australia were always worth seeing and the beachfront city of Surfers Paradise was in incredible place to see that high in the air. Unfortunately ... read more

I'm not sure which blog should come first...the drive to and from the dive, or the diving itself? Whatever, here is my little drive from Brisbane to South West Rock. Most of you will have strictly no idea where is South West Rock, and prior to reading a blog from Elvina I had no idea either. The little town of maybe 6,000 people lay right in between Brisbane and Sydney, roughly 500km from each city. I had done that drive by back in 1999, but at the time I was not much of a diver. I landed mid-morning in Bribane...picked up my rental car and drived the same day the 500km down. All this with speed limits never over 11km...slow drive... My first stop would be Byron Bay. The little seaside town hasn't changed much since ... read more

We stayed at a hostel called Surf 'n Sun in Surfers Paradise. It wasn't the greatest hostel but every night they would have a club that we could get free entry to and a free drink. There was not much to do in the day except go to the beach it is definitely more of a party place, plus it rained most of the time so couldn't actually go to the beach haha. On our first night we went to a club called sin city which was really cool and cheap! On our last day Brittany and Jen the Canadian girls who we met in Byron met us at Surf n Sun so we went out with them and their room mates that night. We really didn't like our room mates in this place there were ... read more

Noosa, Brisbane and Surfer's Paradise. Noosa was amazing, we went to Fraser Island and swam in a freshwater lake (MacKenzie). Today we drove through Brisbane and I had the most amazing sushi for lunch with mango and pineapple tea - yum! Unfortunately Marie left the tour there, so now I'm just hanging out with the tour guide and the driver most of the time! Now I'm at a hotel in Surfer's Paradise which charges loads of money to use the internet, hence the super short sentences! Tomorrow I'm spending the morning here and then at 2:30pm we're driving down to Byron Bay and the day after that I'm going hand gliding! Eep! I'm so excited, skydiving is a step too far but hand gliding sounds just lovely. Gotta run! Love you!... read more

Hi guys! this is my first blog in a long long time! Im pretty sure i havent sat infront of this blog screen since.....New Zealand. Of course I was busy working in Sydney where as Andy was just sat about most of the time. For a couple of sentences from me on that; I loved Sydney I worked in a great bar and made some amazing friends, It really gave me the feeling I was living in Sydney and not just traveling through. More importantly friends have been made that should last the test of time! Sooo I believe Andy has caught the blog up to the point of leaving Sydney and starting our East coast travels. Andy and Alex left two days before me and started their greyhound bus adventure visiting; Newcastle, Coffs Harbour and ... read more

Hello Everyone! Being in Australia where most of the inhabitants live within 100 miles of the coast, I often feel how I have been deprived as a child. Maybe I could have been a beach bunny or a surfer dude if only I had been exposed at a young age to the wonders of beaches. I have seen so many families frolicking on the beach here on the Queensland coast. Including parents and their little children complete with child sized surf boards heading out into the waves. But reality being what it is; I was raised in Illinois. I never even saw a beach until I was 13 and that was the frigid north Pacific. It definitely can't be compared to beautiful Australian surf where the water is so nice. Of course, we had great things ... read more

21.1.12 Had an hour on the beach before it started raining. We had a walk around the shops, bought some sunglasses for me as Sophie sat on my other ones. There was lots of shops and malls that Sophie could have walked around all day but we had to head back to meet Gaz Little as he had come down from Brisbane for the Big Day Out. We met him and decided to go segway racing. We thought it would be loads of fun but turned up and they were so slow and had to keep your distance from the next driver! We decided to leave it and go on a ride called the Vominator. It was one of those rides that spun you round and round really high up in the air. We then headed ... read more
