When we had our second surf lesson, at 11.30 pm we had a challenge to wait for the perfect wave and then stay at the board all the way into the beach. So I paddled out and was waiting for the perfect wave, just as our teacher told us to do. Somehow I am got into a strong current that pulled me away from the beach. When I noticed what was going on it was already too late. I started to panic when I saw my friends at the beach as small dots in the distance. I remember the first day when Mark told us the rules and quickly pulled my hand up in the air, as he told us to do if we were in danger. I pushed my minds of what possibly could be ... read more

Met some nice people on the coach from Byron to surfers, found out the couple Adam and Amy are from hailsham.. And the other guy is Canadian! It was a bit confusing arriving in surfers because it is part of Queensland and they do not have summertime there so I had to put my clock back again! I overheard the people I'd met saying they were in the same hostel as me so I caught the shuttle bus with them to the hostel and they insisted I stay in a room with them! We all went to the shop and they bought dinner for me to split up to make it cheaper! Then they cooked it while I napped as I was so tired from my 5am sunrise excursion! Amy showed me a plan of their ... read more

On the 19th June we left Byron Bay and drove up the coast towards Surfer’s Paradise, where we had booked a one bedroom apartment for 13 nights at ‘The Shore Apartments’, a high rise building (as a lot of the buildings are in the Gold Coast), right opposite the ocean. However, as the drive was only just over an hour (crossing the barrier from New South Wales into Queensland!), we decided that we would make the most of the day and spend the day at Dreamworld theme park! We arrived just before the park opened and got into the short queue that had formed. Our tickets that we had bought and printed out were scanned and we were told to later go to the pass centre to pick up our passes with our photos on them. ... read more

Surfers Paradise you are the most interesting combination of city meets beach! Absolutely stunning, yet bazaar combo I have ever seen but hey if you are looking for a beach front property this is the place for it. Their are sky scrapers a road and then the beach with no in between, a neat visual combo indeed. Surfers is the entertainment and tourism area of the Gold coast and you can do as little or as much as your want. Their are three sided to surfers their is the rich and famous where many celebrates and millionaires have holiday homes and privet yats out front, Oh yes I did the tour. The entertainment portion where you have Sea World Theme Park, Dreamworld,Warner Bros Movie World, Wet'n'Wild Water World, all full of screaming kids and teens and ... read more

After much anticipation we arrived in Byron Bay. Byron was a place we were all looking particularly forward to but unfortunately Cyclone Oswald hit there and we were stuck inside for days! Initially we were meant to camp in our tent but we were given a site underneath a large tree. Having decided this was just a tad precarious we booked into a cabin in the hope we wouldn't drown or get hit by falling trees. A decision well made as the following morning we had a look at our allocated site and the said tree had toppled over! We all counted our blessings that morning! Byron wasnt even hit as bad as some other places but we experienced black outs, flooding and debris all over the roads. The supermarkets even lost power and had to ... read more

Hello hello hello. So we've crossed the border into Queensland and removed an hour of time difference from you lovely people back home. We arrived at our hostel, Backpackers in Paradise, bleary eyed after an early morning start to catch the bus. Georgia had said goodbye to her beautiful man for the last time (sob) and we soon checked in to our 20 bed dorm. Enormous in size and filled with wierdos its safe to say we did not sleep well. With the added bonus of the beds shaking and creaking every time someone rolled over we felt more like we were on a boat - more to come on sleeping on boats later! There was also an interesting resident in our dorm, on the bunk next to Bean who never seemed to leave her bed, ... read more

Once we had jumped on a short flight back from Melbourne to Brisbane we were forced to spend another night in Brisbane due to the fact that there were no buses running from Brisbane down to Surfers Paradise by the time we got back, so we went to the cinema that night and watched Looper, we had a relatively early night to ensure we would be up for our early bus to Surfers Paradise. The following morning we were up at 6 and on the bus by 7am, after we had scoffed a Mcd's breakfast down us, we arrived in Sufers about an hour & a half later but were unable to check in straight away as they were short staffed, the manager gave us both free wifi (which if you ever come to Aus to ... read more

So off to Brisbane we went and Steve and Jenni said you should go to the South Bank as it is really nice. So off we pop with quite a few wrong turns even though we had the Sat Nav. Yes it was still my fault when we went wrong even though the Sat Nav Ozzie lady was telling Mike where to go - how does that work!!! Simple really, Mike says, you’ve got the pictures haha. So we get a pass for the Cat and take a 2 hour ride along the river as I always think you can see a lot of a city going on the river. Whilst on the river boat it started to get really chilly and windy well 25 degrees - I can tell you we sounded like moaning poms ... read more

Because we were due to be staying at Surfers Paradise over the weekend we really struggled to find a decent hostel in a decent location. In the end we settled for the YHA, normally I'd be happy to go with the YHA but it was way out of town, about a 40 minute walk. We rang to book and we were told that there wasn't due to be a shuttle until half four, we were arriving at half three, but if we rang they would come and pick us up. In the end when we arrived we were told that there wouldn't be anyone coming into town until the next shuttle was due and in fact that shuttle was booked up and would be full. We were then told to take a bus and we would ... read more
