Today Amelie is going for the morning session at the kids club and we're going to check out Harbour Town nearby. Its pretty much like the Perth version but bigger and with a few more brands. We pick her up and after a rest head off to the Carrara Markets. These are massive with over 500 stalls of everything you could imagine. But Amelie is not in a mood for that so we have to go back and have a swim. Then we have a buffet dinner and polynesian dance/culture show by the pool. We had a great time but must leave tomorrow.... read more

Amelie is booked into the Kids Club for a few hours today so we (well I) decided to go to Broadbeach to have a look around and check out the Big Pacific Fair shopping centre. Before that we have another "wash" and chill out by the pool. Woah I' ve never seen a Myer so big!!! Dont buy much, just a pair of shoes each and a cheap toy for the dreaded plane journey back home. Tonight we are going to the Outback Experience Show which is the highlight of thr trip for me. We werent allowed to take pictures inside but take a pic at the site: http://www.outbackspectacular.com.au/home.cfm Amelie was cheering away clapping and stomping her feet. The food was great. The horses are so majestic the way they hold their head up high. It ... read more

This is the most exciting day for Amelie. She gets to meet the Wiwles as she calls them. After a morning swim and a bit of a nap we head off.It is not very crowded so that's nice. We head straight for Wiggles World but she gets a bit freaked out when we see the characters. We had our piccie taken with Henry the Octopus but she refused to go anywhere near Dorothy the Dinosaur and Captain feathersword. A repeat of Father xmas but thats cool, we dont insist. Of course we go for a ride in the Big Red Car. Then we have a ride in the teacups and stay at the Wiggles play area for a bit. She is very happy now. Then we went to see the farmyard friends, through the wildlife experience ... read more

I was up early with excitement. We went for a look around the resort which is lovely, took her to the playground and then for a little swim (or wash as she calls it) Then we went off to the shops nearby to get snacks and a few bits. Amelie went to the kids club from 12.30 to 4pm so we got to go and explore Surfers Paradise and have lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe(2 for 1 meal voucher yeah!) I didnt imagine it would be such a big resort with all these high rise hotels, feels a lot like the spanish resorts of Costa Brava/Costa Dorada. We keep getting stopped in the street by people who want to sell you theme park tickets or time share. Its very touristy, the beach looks nice. Back ... read more

We arrived in Surfer's Paradise at 12.30pm on Sunday 20 May and checked into the Islander Resort Hostel. We stayed in a hotel style room with 2 bunk beds. After walking along the beach and around the town, I had a brief siesta followed by a 2 hour internet session. In the evening we went to an Indian restaurant for dinner and then went to sleep at 11pm. On Monday, Ian and I went to Wet'n'Wild waterpark with Dan and Rich. It was an overcast day but we had great fun and we didn't have to queue for any rides. We were at the park from 10am to 4pm and went on each ride several times - our favourite being the Tornado. After getting the bus home, I had a siesta before we met up ... read more

We had earplugs made this evening to try to help us deal with the wind noise in our helmets. The motorcycles themselves are relatively quiet, but at higher speeds the wind is aggravating my tinnitus. As we’d eventually like to be able to listen to our MP3 players and talk to each other using radios, we had small speakers added to the plugs. ... read more

Flying High in Surfer’s Paradise Decision Making as Team Turner - Which Way Do We Go Today? On our trip thus far, Mike and I have traded off being the strategic idea person and, alternately, the nuts ‘n bolts administrative lackey making the tactical plans and reservations. For example, I came up with the wild and crazy idea of this trip around the world (or at least a good part of the world) but Mike really dug into the original planning of our first days in Spain and Portugal. Since then, for the most part, Mike has set up our travel itinerary in the most general terms and I have taken the lion’s share of making reservations, choosing hotels/motels and ensuring we have a place to sleep at night and a (hopefully) reputable way to get ... read more

With the great help of Rick Gard at Morgan and Wacker in Southport we nervously picked up our two BMW F650 GS motorcycles that we ordered back in December as our 2006 Christmas presents to each other. ... read more

We know our desire to ride all the way around Australia on motorcycles is just a bit ambitious (pick up the sarcasm?) considering we’ve only been riding motorcycles for three years (apart from a year riding remote trails in Ethiopia 37 years ago), and have never ridden anything larger than 250 cc, so our first step is to take a “refresher” course on the type of motorcycles we hope to pick up tomorrow. ... read more

After a short 2000km flight south from Cairns to Brisbane we were greeted at the airport by another of Geoff’s old mates, Mac. In fact, this is the guy that ran Aquasports at Poole, the company we mentioned in the last blog that Jo, Mark and Geoff all used to work for. The story is quite simple, making money out of a British summer was pretty tricky (from what we’ve heard about the UK weather this year, I’m sure this will make sense) and the profits (if any) were extremely unpredictable. So about 15 years ago, Mac and his wife Dot headed down under with a container load of boats and dive gear, to try again in a warmer climate. They live an hour south of Brisbane at a place called Helensvale, near Surfers Paradise ... read more
