Our Weekend away at the Sunshine Coast
Installment #1
I took so many photos that I have to do this in installments!
So we packed up the car and headed to the coast! Due to requirements of the holiday park about bringing your own linen the car was full of sheets, blankets and pillows. I think soon we will have to buy roof racks or a trailer!! Or get rid of one of the kids, or get a bigger car! First stop on this weekend of fun...
We got to TIPTOE through the Strawberry Fields. A friend of mine always has the yummiest strawberries. I asked where she got them from. She said The Strawberry Fields. Since she lives and hour from me, I didn't think too much more about it. When a family function arose giving us a reason to go to the Sunshine Coast my friend reminded me about going to The Strawberry Fields. I looked up their website www.strawberryfields.com.au and got directions. We followed a road off the highway at Palmview and were soon amongst rows of strawberries.
Being a favourite fruit of my children, they were very excited!
We were given a container and told to PYO... yes... PICK YOUR OWN!! At $10 a kg the price was fairly reasonable. Sometimes you can get 2nd grade at a cheaper price. My friend has previously got 2kg for $10. The shop also sold varying grades and types and weights that you didn't have to pick. They also sold some strawberry related food and paraphernalia. However of course the children INSISTED that we pick our own! So we lined up and signed up to become fruit pickers 😊
We were directed to pick from Patch 17, you couldn't just pick anywhere, I suppose they are ripe at different times? The children were so excited they didn't know what to do. So mum and dad had to give a few instructions... NO green ones, NO mushy mouldy ones, NO eating while picking, NO teeny tiny ones and BIGGER isnt necessarily BETTER! We also had to get them to slow down a bit, otherwise we would be buying more than 1kg!! They were picking everything in sight. You pay after you pick so it meant no eating while picking. Unfortunately the baby didn't get that memo and sunk her teeth
in straight away, and was upset when we kept her from eating more! In the end it all only came to 700gms so we could have picked more!
Picked and weighed and paid for we started eating straight away. Warm from the sunlight on them, they tasted so fresh and grass like. Even though it was easy as, and we weren't there for long, nothing tastes better than the fruits of your own work!! It was also a first trip to a farm of any sorts for the girls and they enjoyed eating their work too!
Leaving the farm we could go back to the highway or continue on a dirt road in a more direct route to holiday park. Always up for an adventure and to test out the "All Wheel Drive" part of our car hubby chose the dirt road. We followed and came to a cattle gate. Now you know you are off the beaten track when you have to get out of the car to open and close gates. But we at the coast near caloundra so knew we werent too far from society. We kept driving but never really saw the
left hand turn we had to make, with no signs and just tracks to follow we ended up going straight and never turned left. So we ended up making a bit of a U shape and ended up further north than the strawberry fields and had to go back along the highway and do it all over again anyway!! All we had was fields, trees, cattle, gates, the occassional creek and farm shack. The girls got a little frightened because they thought we were lost, but with reassurance from mum and dad enjoyed our little "bush bashing." We also enjoyed it to.. Felt like we were really in the country when we knew we were only 5km from the national Highway!
We finally made it to the Dicky Beach Family Holiday Park. They were awesome enough to let us check in 2 hours early!! So we unpacked and settled in and set off to the beach.
Check out the next installment for what we did!!
