Sarina > Rockhampton > Yeppoon > Gladstone > Bundaberg (not all in one day!!) 23rd November to 7th December 2011 Leaving Sarina we had mixed feelings (again!), we had a great spot on the beach which all of us had enjoyed, particularly Jackie, so we were sorry to leave this campsite, but we are headed towards Rocky and Yeppoon which we were looking forward to. Our first stop was Camilla beach about 70 klm south of Sarina. Camilla Beach is a free campsite in the bushline behind the beach, don’t get too excited here and camp on the sand as the tide can come right up to the bushline. As with a lot of this part of the coastline there was ample evidence of damage caused by Cyclone Yasi, but this will all recover with time. ... read more

Pardon us backtracking for a moment, but in the last blog we forgot to mention that when heading across to Townsville as we headed away from Mt Isa we came across the first feral cat (dead) we have seen in all our travels. We were astounded at the number of cats we saw with the greatest concentration/epicentre around Julia Creek. The total was 18 live and 18 dead/road-kill, and no, Geoff did not run over any of them although if we weren’t towing 3 tonnes of caravan… the score may have been different. And for what it is worth, we have not seen a single rabbit amongst the dead things that litter the side of the road. We also need to mention that on this leg, there was a definite highlight and one to be recommended ... read more

Tuesday 16th Aug Left Bundaberg and headed to Calliope (about 20klms out of Gladstone) - was told that accomodation was at a premium at Gladstone because all the workers in town had taken all the accomodation and there was very little for tourists so we decided to stay at Calliope. We had prebooked a powered site at Calliope Caravan Park but when we arrived it was very average (well actually below average) but as there was no other option we stayed the night ($20). We checked out the Calliope River free camping area but were amazed at how many caravans were staying here (about 50 caravans on both sides of the river). Wednesday 17th Aug Headed to Rockhampton and booked into the Riverside Tourist Park $32 pn (Family Park) - very nice little park right on ... read more

Zwei ... read more

Saturday 9th July 2011 We arrived in Rockhampton shortly after lunch, having stopped at the Mount Larcom Rest area about 100kms south. As we had already done some shopping in Gladstone we only stopped at the Information Centre there before heading west to the Bill Kingel Caravan Park at Keppel Sands about 40kms away. We had rung ahead before leaving town which was just as well as there were only 2 powered spots left. We were met at the gate by a large dark gent who gave us an envelope with a key and instructions to our site. The manager had gone out, the office closed and the envelope given to her friend. We were directed to a lovely site, well lawned and with a concrete slab for our verandah. Shortly after we had finished setting ... read more

After 8 hours travelling we finally made it to Rockhampton. We haven't found anything we've forgotten yet which is a good thing I guess. Today's highlights were watching the many Army vehicles going in the opposite direction and going past an extra-wide load in the form of a mining truck tipper tray. It was huge! Tomorrow we are heading to Townsville so another long day in the car so we'd better get some sleep.... read more
