Adventure 4 was the simplest and most laid back - the sunset cruise on Lady Douglas. Far North Queensland is known for a couple of troublesome locals that need caution around the waters edge. My favourite bite thing is the salt water crocodile. I dont want to tangle with either the stingers (2 types of jelly fish) or the crocs, but admire the crocs smile all be it a menacing look. The sunset cruise is intended to spot crocs, and as the air temperatures are warming now, more will come out onto the estuary banks. Our skipper for the cruise was getting a little ancious that we had not spotted any, swimming or on the bank, and on the last reach of the estuary, there she spotted a 3 metre plus male. These creatures are not ... read more

There's a bunch of reasons to come to Port Douglas in far north Queensland. There are two wWorld heritage listed reserves at Port douglas, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rain Forest. Then there's the great food! Oh, the people are really friendly and very helpful as a bonus. In our case we headed north for the full eclipse of the sun on next Wednesday, so what can we do for a week? We opted for more walk, less fabulous food and have been excited everyday with what we have found. We have visited Mossman Gorge, The Habitat Sanctuary, Sky Rail and the Kuranda Butterfly Sanctuary. Now, if you are pregnant, I'm sorry to say that delivery of your baby will surely be delayed a few weeks as Mrs Black Stork has 3 week old ... read more

One of our adventures was a half day into Mossman Gorge. Even though we were there at the end of the dry season, the river/streams were flowing steadily. Mossman Gorge has been a popular spot for years, but parking and fascilities were near non-existant until a couple of months back. The local Aboriginal people have built a huge carpark, and then run a shuttle bus up to the palk walkway entrance. Visitors can do one of several self guided walks, or there are now escorted tours where the Aboriginal Guide will tell of their tribal past in this very picturesque valley. Everytime we go out and about we see something really fascinating in the bush. On this walk we came accross a male scrub turkey building a nest for his beloved. The bigger the nest mound, ... read more

I have worked a LOT this last few weeks, doing between 5 - 8 days on and 2 days off, so the little time I've had off has been for chilling out. Besides not really wanting to write about work, I was too tired to write about anything anyway. I started writing this post about 2 weeks ago, so I've been constantly updating and changing it. I'll write about the highlights of the activities I've had the last four weeks or so. Today I've had the first day off after 9 days of work, so I think it's as good time as any to finally finish this post. First major event we had was that Jessie, my American flatmate, left Australia for the time being and went off to travel for a while until November, month ... read more

It rained again last night, luckily we didn't have any washing out this time! We were up early at 6:15am for our quad biking tour. We drove to a place called Daintree Station, about 30 minutes away from Port Douglas. Quad biking was brilliant! There we only 4 of us, so a nice small group. We drove around for 2 hours through fields and part of the rainforest. We went up and down some big hills, and through lots of muddy puddles, rivers and streams. We stopped at the 'mud pit' where we got incredibly dirty doing doughnuts and spins in the mud to deliberately coat each other from head to toe. We don't think we've ever been so muddy in our lives! The quads were very bumpy, and Kayley nearly fell off several times! Charles ... read more

We were woken in the middle of the night by a massivetropical storm, when it rains here it really does rain apparently! We had left our washing out, not good! Despite the rain it was still boiling hot out all night so we didn't sleep too well. When we got up we drove 3 hours to Port Douglas which is our most northerly stop before we head back down to Cairns. Apart from going to the shops to get some food and cooking fajitas we haven't done anything else! But that's ok as tomorrow we're going quad biking!... read more

Well been in the Australian rain forest on a tour using Daintree Safari. The tour was great but honestly is this a rain forest - I do not think so - maybe we have been travelling so long that are we being de-sensitized to some amazing things due to our seeing so many wonders around the world - I think we are so ignore my previous comments. Tour guide Nick was amazing and if you know anyone who is coming here and needs a guide Nick is your man. So picked up at 7.30am, yes I said AM! OMG we are in a chilling mode getting up this early is not on. So off in the 4x4 we go with another couple from San Francisco. We drive through a sleepy town called Mossman where on the ... read more

Well we are really chilling out in our little cottage in Port Douglas. Had to do the boring stuff yesterday such as washing and ironing. Mind you we have not seen a washing machine for weeks so it was great being able to really clean our clothes instead of having to hand wash them only. We have also booked a few things for the rest of this week. We are off to the world heritage site of Daintree Rainforest tomorrow so it is going to be a real early start for us of 07.30 - not used to this since we have been in Port Douglas I have been rocking out of bed at around 10ish - plus heaven on earth had a cup of rosie lee (that's tea if you do not understand cockney!) in ... read more

I am writing this from the airport lounge in Alice Springs with a small rucksack and a bleeding large tube with the paintings I bought!!! Well we have now joined the Australian Youth Hostel Association as it gives you a discount when you book the Greyhound Bus which we have booked now from Cairns through to Sydney. The Greyhound bus is a lot more reasonable than flying and you can hop on hop off which is great as we seem to have a plan on the places we are going to stay. Whilst flying we reflected on the Anangu (aborigines - to us Poms) people Everyone we saw from this tribe seemed to look sad and living at the lower of the economic scale - it really touched us and really brought home to us the ... read more

Us Chileans, wherever we are and whatever we're doing, will always celebrate our Independence Day (or at least try to), even if we just have a small get-together with friends, to commemorate the 18th of September of 1810 when Chile declared its independence from the Spanish crown (while the Spanish king Ferdinand VII was captive of the French). This is the day in which the process of our independence began and thus started a violent period in which the patriots fought the royalists. The real independence day was February 12th, 1818, in which the act of Independence was signed. And there was a still a Spanish stronghold until 1826 in the Island of ChiloƩ. But enough of history. We celebrate that day in Chile and the celebrations usually last at least a few days. No matter ... read more
