Rick and Robin decided to take me to their house on the nearby North Stradbroke Island the day before my last day in Australia. They really went out of their way to take me since my flight was at 2:00 pm the following day. Rick had looked up the times of the flights to Turkey and assumed mine was the later one, I felt bad to correct him to tell him I had to be at the airport at noon and said that I completely understood if we couldn’t make it over there, but he insisted we go.
I was so tired from the non-stop adventure that I had experienced ever since I set foot in Brisbane that I went to sleep in the car on the way over on the barge. After I awoke Rick poured Robin and I a glass of wine and we finished the barge ride in style.
Once on the Island I was anything but asleep since the views were spectacular! Straddie is a beautiful place, with wonderful walking paths, long reaching beaches, and a relaxed atmosphere. The Oliver’s house is situated on a place on the Island called Point Lookout – the furthest East point
on the Coast of Australia and this is where it is said that the Aboriginals saw James Cook sail in when he discovered Australia.
We got to the house, aptly named Sea Stables, and unloaded our stuff for the night, and then Robin took me on a walk around some of the Island on a path that led to one of the very few pubs on the Island. I could have stood in awe for hours as the sky was a mix of pink, purple, and a glowing orange as the sun set over the Island. The trail we took was magnificently groomed, and the Island itself was very well preserved. We continued on our walk to the pub where we met Rick and we all watched the final minutes of the sunrise from the great views of the pub.
We rode around a bit to see if we could spot some kangaroos and we found a whole pack of them! One even had a joey! Once we got back to the house Robin prepared a fabulous meal and we all retired since the next day was going to start early since we had to fit everything in before we
got on the 10:00 am barge back to the mainland.
Robin took me for a wonderful walk around part of the island and was a wonderful tour guide as you could tell she really loved the Island and felt connected to it. The walking paths were very nicely maintained and we were one of few out walking that morning so it made it that much more special. Robin would tell me old Aboriginal tales about the parts of the Island and it was almost like you were there back when they were the guardians of the land.
We finished up our walk and had a nice breakfast back at the house then it was time to pack up and head to the airport! I was excited to start the next leg of my journey and to see me Dad, but sad to see my time in Australia end.
We got to the airport right on time and I said my goodbyes to Rick and Robin then headed onto the next part of my journey!
Till Next Time
