Getting from Fraser Island to Noosa just a 45 minute ferry ride and 2 hours drive away was the first little blip in the itinerary.Nothing had been arranged and nothing seemed to coordinate. The ferry arrived after the greyhound bus had left and the only other way was to take bus /taxi to the train station in a different small town from the ferry port, train it to another town, and then a further bus , it would have taken all day for 200 kms in the heat- not good. So the resort booked me a taxi at vast expense and I mean vast expense , I could have hired a car for a week on what it was going to cost! Every day life here is very expensive food, travel, drink eating out etc .I ... read more

up early and out, i punched terrys address in the sat nav and set off, the sat nave said it was 230 odd k/l to terrys and i realised he was an hour the other side of brisbane, we made for an area called broadbeach whish is just passed the SURF capital of the gold coast, we found a jekyl motel as all the accomadation on the front were apartment blocks and they werent keen to rent for 1 night, we booked in and walked up to the beach but after a short while the sky became dark and we went back to the motel. we had arrangd to meet terry at the glades golf club which proved a tricky one to find but we got there and terry was with his wife and a couple ... read more

Geo: -26.3833, 153.156-13Dec09Decided we needed to see southern Queensland and booked a week in the Sunshine Coast in Sept. then I got a new job so had to reschedule until December which as it turned out was fortuitous as by then I was 6 months pregnant and C was covered in road burn but that's another story. We had planned to take 10 days with a 2 day road trip either side but that wasn't possible with our jobs and it was no great loss as we had already done road trip from Sydney to Byron and Noosa is about another 4 hrs on, so didn't miss any new experiences there really as we ended up driving down as far as Nimbin (near Byron) and back for the craic. So we flew up at 9am to Sunshine coast ... read more

There are those who say you can have too much of a good thing. But, let’s face it, they’re mostly boring old bastards who don’t get out that much. Nine months of third-world travel, though, had definitely taken their toll, and on returning to Australia in October, we were glad to be back home at last. Arriving only served to remind us how lucky we are to have moved to one of the best spots on earth, let alone have had the chance to travel for a year and safely return. Even so, after only a few days recuperation I found myself left with a sense of unfinished business. The year was not yet over. The few pennies we had left could easily have lasted us till Christmas had we chosen to stay in cheap foreign ... read more

Passing through Gin Gin we soon arrive in Childers and make a stop at the backpackers memorial in the visitors centre (a fire killed a number of backpackers at the hostel) Its very moving and, having stayed in a number of hostels on our travels we can totally understand how easy a fire could take hold. Continuing on our journey we drive into Noosa and find a place that has more roundabouts than Milton Keynes! Is this for real? Apparently there are over 100 of them in this small town. Parking up we head to find out if any free camping is around but once again are told there is nothing. This is a big difference that we are finding on the east coast that with so many beach towns there is a big push to ... read more

October 17 - Waking up and having my usual breakfast of peanut butter toast and an orange around 830 a.m. was a great start to the eventful day. Andy, Maria, and I met up with Andy S Paul, and a group of at least 30 other mostly German students at the pavilion at UniCentral. We hung out for a bit then headed over to the bus stop to take the 615 bus to Landsborough train station. After overfilling the bus with standing room only left we were off to the station that only takes 20 minutes to get to. Then the mass of us boarded the train to Brisbane, in our car we had DJ Paul playing German music the entire hour train ride to Bowen Hills station. There was plenty of German karaoke for entertainment ... read more

We’ve been having a great time around Noosa. Yesterday we went in early to get our great parking spot in the shady car park near the beach. The heavy seas earlier this year did a lot of damage to the beach and the boardwalk but they’ve pumped a lot of sand onto the beach and the boardwalk is being rebuilt. We enjoyed walking along the beach, sitting watching the passing parade, then looking through all the nice Noosa shops. We finally got to celebrate our anniversary with lunch at a beachside restaurant; I had spiced Algerian duck with a sweet jus, spinach, ‘wilted’ of course, and polenta and pistachios, all quite delicious. There were about six spits of rain early this morning which soon fined to a lovely, if hot and humid day. We drove to ... read more

Our next stop up the coast was Noosa. It is about halfway between Brisbane and Hervey Bay and so a convenient stopping point but our main reason for being here was to visit Australia Zoo. Australia Zoo was the home of the late and great Steve Irwin and is now run by his wife. It is famed for its spectacular croc shows.... Crikey! On arrival into Noosa we hit the beach, but soon left as it was pretty windy (Joe hates sand, especially when it is blowing in his face) and also rammed with people. Apparently it is the start of another school holidays in Australia and Noosa is a popular destination for holidaymakers. We could see why as it is a very nice upmarket type destination and Sarah took the opportunity to do a bit ... read more

If the truth be known, we only really came here as it was in between New Zealand and SE Asia. Both of us never had much desire to come here, not that we had anything against it. It just seemed it wasn’t going to be any different to most places and also full of Irish, again, nothing against the Irish, after all I am one of them. That’s another thing, being Irish. It helps. We’ve all heard the phrase ‘everybody loves the Irish’. Well only a fool would believe that and I don’t for a second think that everybody likes us, but we are most certainly more liked than a lot of countries around the world. I suppose we never tried to take control of a country by force. We always slipped in the back door, ... read more
