Today we caught the Ferry back to Townsville and then the bus to Mission Beach where suprise suprise.....it rained! ALL day for 2 days! Not wanting to waste our time however we decided to maximise the hostels facilities and played a marathon 4 hour game of monopoly where Elin became champion...unfortunately a hotel on Old Kent Road didn't quite cut it! However more drama was to be created from the game as standing up to move away from the rain Becky whacked her toe on the bench and as a result it is now bent and broken! Unfortunately we didn't manage to make it to the actual beach as now crippled and wet the thought of the beach was not appealing but film and popcorn night was greatly appreciated!!... read more

In true Queensland style, much of the last fortnight was spent in the water. It was either beautiful and sunny - so we lazed on the beach, or it was pouring with rain - so we just got wet whatever we did. We arrived into Cooktown after a very short drive from the Lions Den. Paul spent the afternoon trying for that elusive fish, whilst the kids and I spent time at the foreshore at the playground and the musical ship. We checked out the James Cook Museum, where an anchor from the Bark Endeavour is displayed. We also spent some time at The Botanic Gardens. The interpretive centre there housed a huge collection of reptiles of Cape York, which particularly impressed the boys. Dziś zaliczyliśmy najwcześniejszą pobudkę podczas pobytu w Australii i o godzinie 6:20 byliśmy już w drodze - z konieczności, nie z wyboru, gdyż mieliśmy do pokonania ponad 500 km, po drodze chcieliśmy bez pośpiechu zwiedzić oceanarium w Townsville, i tym razem naprawdę musieliśmy dotrzeć do celu przez zapadnięciem zmroku. Miejsce, w którym mamy zarezerwowane dwa kolejne noclegi, nazywa się Sanctuary i stanowi kompleks domków kempingowych rozlokowanych na dużym obszarze w tropikalnym lesie w okolicy Mission Beach. W mailu potwierdzającym rezerwację napisano, że to ważne, abyśmy dotarli tam za dnia, gdyż do recepcji prowadzi 600-metrowej długości ścieżka przez las, którą (cytuję) „po zmroku przejmują we władanie dzikie zwierzęta, z którymi raczej nie chcecie się spotkać”. Viel zu spät fahren wir nach den Ausflug ins Auqarium in den Sonnenuntergang Richtung Norden mit dem bangen Gefühl, dass wir unmöglich vor Einbruch der Dämmerung im Sanctuary Retreat ankommen werden. (Dies wird aber empfohlen, da es mitten im Regenwald liegt und man nicht mit dem Auto bis dorthin fahren kann.) Wir passieren Tully ohne zu wissen, dass wir schon sehr bald wieder in diesem Örtchen einkehren werden. Beim Sanctuary angekommen läuten wir mit einem von Spinnen besetzten Telefon bei der Unterkunft durch und fühlen uns ob der knacksenden, uneindeutigen und bedrohlichen Geräuschen ziemlich unwohl in unserer Haut. Leider geht es mir sehr schlecht mit meiner Histamin-Intoleranz und wir beschließen in das Krankenhaus in Tully zu fahren. Onwards and upwards from Townsville (that’s north), one of our shortest journeys to date, the day after will be the shortest. We stop at Mutarnee, got to mention the park. It’s big, it’s quiet and has excellent facilities, park where we like for $25! Alas only stopping one night whilst we visit Paluma Range National Park. We had another steep climb before looking back over the valley to the sea. We then visited Little and Big Crystal Creeks, both fantastic spots for a swim (see pics) and then The Water Slides, more for the brave or maybe foolish as you shoot down the rapids between the rocks (pic of foolish girl in IBTWYPDB was censored by Deb, sorry guys).
