My cousin met me in Bangkok and we kicked things off in style. We headed to the State Tower, where they filmed scenes from The Hangover 2, for an overpriced cocktail on the 56th floor. It was pretty swanky and the view of Bangkok was amazing. We then went from one extreme to the other, with a speedy, ever so slightly hysterical tuk-tuk ride (poor Bec had ony been in the country for a few hours) to th Khao San Road - Backpacker Central. The area is pretty infamous, (probably thanks to The Beach, and by this time I had read the book - surprisingly good - and accidentally watched the film twice in one day) and within minutes we had encountered lots of drunk falang, several offers for ping pong shows, rats, and argumentative Thai ... read more

Saturday 10th – after our fantastic trip of yesterday we decided to have a relatively quiet day for what would be our last day at Lake Placid. We knew we would need to do some shopping at some time but we were in no hurry. As the morning went on Graham wondered if Dale and Alison, our companions from yesterday, would fancy a trip to Smithfield. Travelling in a Winnebago is especially comfortable but practicalities like shopping are sometimes difficult because of the challenge of parking such a large vehicle at or near to a shopping precinct. Alison was thrilled with the idea and Dale had some electrical items he wanted to purchase so a trip to the shops was just what they needed. We arranged to meet up at 11:00am and in the meantime Graham ... read more

We have just arrived at Mission Beach, after being on the road bush camping for three days. We tumbled out of the car, hurriedly put all our electronic goods on to charge, and then gratefully leapt into the showers (admittedly the younger two more reluctantly, as they love not having to bath!). We now feel a bit more civilized and are looking forward to a few days exploring this part of Queensland. Already, we have seen quite some devastation from Cyclone Yasi earlier this year: trees uprooted, roofs blown off buildings, and roads full of pot holes. It is six months on, but one gets the impression that the memory of Yasi is still quite vivid. I have been asked by a few people what we mean by bush camping. Well, this is something we hope ... read more

Cairns to South Mission Beach This entry is my wrap-up for this particular trip. All of the Peugeot people enjoyed a relaxing few days in Cairns, sightseeing, sitting around and going out for dinner. Suddenly we were all going our separate ways, although there was still a small nucleus travelling back to Victoria, Tasmania and WA initially together, and splitting off along the road. Nigel and I headed for South Mission Beach and 3 weeks of doing not very much at all. I’ve included a few photos from that time here – the captions tell their stories. ... read more

August 9th Leaving Jourama Falls, we headed to Ingham for breakfast, and then to Mission Beach. The drive to Mission beach took us through the towns of Cardwell and Tully, both of which had been severe victims of Cyclone Yasi. Having driven past many state forests near Brisbane, I had expected to see rows of pine trees in perfect rows, much like soldiers on the parade grounds. However, the pine forests next to the Bruce Highway were bent in odd directions. Much of that wood would be unusable given the angles in which it had been blown. In addition to the trees at angles, many trees were uprooted and had careened into others around them. Quite a mess. This mess in the forest hadn’t prepared us for the devastation that was seen in the towns of ... read more

Mission Beach Caravan Park is council run and right on the beach. Very cheap at $17 per night so we stayed for 5 nights. Couldn't have asked for a better view and easy walk to shops and cafes. I even splurged and got my hair done :-) Apparently the bearded wolf man dosen't need his hair done? The drive here passed through Cardwell and Tully and we drove out to Tully Heads and very shocked to see the damage in all these places from Cylone Yassi. Tully Heads was particularly bad. Every house there seems to be totally destroyed and only a couple are being repaired the rest look abandoned. Spent a day out at the Tully Gorge the water looks very inviting but way to cold to get in for a swim. Went exploring the ... read more

We were packed up in record timing in the morning. We were soon on our way to Mission Beach. We were not really sure what to expect but we knew that it is a popular place that many people had talked about. When we arrived we were quite disappointed. The recent weather had churned up the sea and there was a lot of debris on the sand - including dead fish. It surprised us that on such a popular beach there was no hurry to clean it. We were told that South Mission Beach would be nicer, so we decided to give it a go. On the way there the road cut through the rain forest. There were signs telling us to be careful of the Cassowaries - a large endangered flightless bird . We had ... read more

Saturday 4th, we left Cairns and began the trip of a life time. Surely this is every boys dream? Isn't it? Well for the three of us this dream has been put on ice way to long! So Mikey was first to get behind the wheel and into the hot seat, where we headed for 'josephine falls' For any of you Georgraphers Josephine Falls, are located at the foot of the southern face of Mount Bartle Frere in the Wooroonooran National Park. Yes, I noted this down in my Journal as I loved the name of this place! Josephine Falls, has had 5 deaths in the last 3 years, (and DF nearly made this 6 thanks to Scott). Whilst everybody was swimming in the bottom pool the three of us ignored all warning signs and sign ... read more

Tuesday 30th November While i was sleeping on this fine and peaceful morning Jill had got up early and changed our Skydive from tomorrow too today. So my wake up call sounds a bit like ' Leon, wake up, we're skydiving in a hours time!' Great! I thought. It dawned on me that its best its been forced upon us a day early as i would not have slept so well last night had i kinow i was jumping out a plane today. We had breakfast and a bus came and picked us up and took us around to the Mission Sky dive centre which was only a hlaf mile down the beach from Scottys hostel. Its a bloody gorgeous day by the way, at least 35oC and not a cloud in sight, perfect for skydiving. ... read more
