We were up at 8am and soon packed up to continue our interrupted trip to Maryborough. The drive was reasonable, although we encountered a few lots of roadworks and had to wait about 10 minutes at one. The ideal time to have Ginger Bar and juice box each. Along the route some stretches of the road were labelled as “Fatigue Zones”. The first we saw had a board to say that playing trivia games helps keep you alert. About 500 metres further along was another board with a trivia question on it about Queensland. Then about a kilometre later was the answer. They did 4 questions and answers in that zone. We saw 2 more “Fatigue Zone Trivia Games”. Very cleverly they promoted special features of the area, as well as keeping the drivers awake. We ... read more

We had to wake up early to drive to Hervey Bay and all three of us were very tired. But we had pree-booked a tour to explore Fraser Island which left at 8.30 am so there was no time to be slow. Fraser Island is the world biggest sand island and world heritage listed by UNESCO. We spent the day exploring and got to see things like the central station, Lake McKenzie, Seventyfive-mile beach, Eli Creek, Maheno Shipwreck and The Pinnacles Colored Sands. The island was stunningly beautiful. We had buffet for lunch at Eurong Beach Resort which was included in the price of the tour. The price was 160 AUD per person as we got the Off Peak Price. The tour also included the national park fees and the fully-day guided 4WD tour. The tour ... read more

The next morning we got ready for another travel day, this time we were driving to Maryborough to spend the night there before going to Fraser Island. The drive took about 5 hours, including breaks. The journey went smooth and we took turns on who were driving. We ate lunch at a small restaurant close to the road. It was not very good but luckily we did not have high expectations. When we got to the hotel we checked in and got our room. We had booked a family room at Maryborough Motel and Conference Center, the price for two nights was 1615 SEK which was a really good deal. We ate at dinner a restaurant in Maryborough, it was descent. When we had finished with our dinner we went back to our room and relaxed ... read more

Was up early this morning again, but this time with some purpose. It was a cool night and mist drifted along the still river water. Started getting the boat ready as the weather forecast was still favourable. Popped back to the marina, dumped off some rubbish, collected another 20 litres of water and hoped to say goodbye to Brett (the marina manager) but his boat looked closed up so I think he was still in bed. Anchor up and headed up the river saying goodbye to Maryborough. This has been the longest we have been anchored in any one place... ever! A beautiful clear sunny day but still cool. Had to dodge debris in the river in places again, mostly branches. We did plan to anchor at Beaver Rocks which we could see had about 20 ... read more

Well as the title suggests we are still in Maryborough. With strong winds blowing various wrong directions at our potential next anchorages in the Sandy Straits or Harvey Bay we have decided to stay put. Weather has been like a British summer, not very warm, often cloady, with frequent showers. Despite this, life on the river here has been quite nice and we have had lots of time to explore this lovely little historic town, but we feel we have been here long enough now and will probably head down the river tomorrow. Our first full day here was a Thursday which was good timing as this is market day in Maryborough and they have the steam train running along the portside. Tied up at the marina and walked the 10 minutes to the townhall and ... read more

Another 2 days of windy weather and scattered showers. Saw a news feed from the Gold Coast about the beaches getting battered by bad weather so makes us appreciate that we are sheltered by Fraser Island. And also that we got over the Wide Bay Bar when we did as otherwise we would be spending at least a week in Mooloolaba waiting for conditions to improve. With the weather not showing signs of improving soon we have extra time to sight-see in this area. Tuesday after some tasty banana pikelets we took the dingy north as there was a "disused log-dump worth seeing" according to the cruising guide and also an old shipwreck. Stopped off to explore Buff Creek and at its mouth jumped out on the tiny beach there. Naomi found me some new shorts. ... read more

Up early for a jog – making the most of the morning sun without the searing heat. We all sat round and had breakfast together before Rowena, Matt and I headed off to Hervey Bay, a local town and beach area. Once at Hervey Bay we dipped in a few shops so Matt could have a look in the sales for the Samsung tablet he wanted to get for Christmas. Once purchased we headed to the beach – it was rather quiet and looked like they had had a few extra high tides, as some of the beach had been washed away, with some fish and lots of jellyfish washed up. However the area and remaining beach was still nice so we walked along and found a nice spot to settle on. Like yesterday the water ... read more

Up at 6am for my traditional Christmas morning jog - just this year in considerably warmer temperatures. So once completed I jumped straight in the pool to cool off. We all sat and had a very yummy breakfast of fresh fruit salad together before Dell and Cheryl headed off to church and Matt, Rowena and I headed to the beach. We headed to a beautifully quiet beach, and the tied was going out so we splashed and walked out in the shallow water for ages. Eventually we got far enough out to be thigh deep and go for a swim. We realised however that there were lots of jellyfish in the slightly deeper water going out with the tide, we must have past around 30, and after successfully dodging them it got increasingly harder, so we ... read more

Prawns are the traditional food for an Australian Christmas lunch. So at 5.30am Rowena, Matt, Dell and I exited the house and head to the fish market to secure tomorrows lunch. The market is only round the corner, but when we arrived there was already a queue out the door and we were number 50 in the queue. An hour later and 4kg of prawns later we emerged. By this time there were now two queues, one to get a number, and then one for once you have your number to get served, both rather substantial lengths. Feeling a tired but a little smug we had secured our haul, we went back for breakfast of poached eggs and ham. Went all spent several hours chatting and relaxing over breakfast, enjoying the morning. Rowena and I went ... read more

Up early to finish sorting my room and giving it a good clean before heading off on our Christmas holiday. Left the house at 11am and we expected the traffic out of Brisbane to be terrible, but it was flowing freely the whole way. We were spending Christmas with Matt’s nan (Dell) in Maryborough which was around a 3.5 hour drive, so pretty close in Australian terms! Dell is a fantastic lady, very sharp and intelligent and so very welcoming, which was lovely. After a cold and refreshing drink and an hour or so of chatting Rowena, Matt had a quick change and headed into the pool. It was heaven after the long drive and the heat and we stayed in for several hours, emerging slightly prune like! We all had a lovely chilled evening, with ... read more
