Surprise, surprise we managed to get down to the harbour one hour before the catamaran was due to leave. So at 9:30 am we arrived for a trip that was leaving at 11 am. Time for coffee. The Australians call their café americano a tall black. So it has become nicknamed by us a Long Tall Sally! We boarded the cat and set off for Green Island to see the Great Barrier Reef. Don added snorkeling to the tour and gave his driver's licence as a deposit for the snorkel kit. The little cat took us to the mother ship moored at the island where you could get fruit and water and sit in the air conditioning when you needed to get out of the heat. We went on a glass bottomed boat out to the ... read more

Boom! Was the sound we awoke to, a bat had flown directly into our balcony door. Luckily, he wasn’t hurt and was able to fly away and far from us. We headed to the dock to get on our boat, destination: The Great Barrier Reef, one of the Natural 7 Wonders of the World. Our first stop was Green Island where we desperately hungry but no places were open yet. Eric went swimming for a bit and Vicky laid out at the beach before their helicopter ride over the Great Barrier Reef began. This was a super cool experience: 1. Neither one of us had ever been in a helicopter and 2. The views of the reef were breathtaking. We made friends with the gentleman that gave us our safety briefing and he invited Eric to ... read more

GREEN ISLAND DAY TRIP Green Island is a very tiny island just off the coast of Cairns. It was a bit of an extravagant thing to do but we are so glad we went. It would have been nice to stay overnight but we have 23 little animals waiting for us back in Mareeba. One in particular would have been extremely traumatised if we didn’t come back. The weather was brilliant, sunny and 30, light winds and the water temperature was perfect so we picked a good day to go. Bit of an early start to get on the boat in Cairns and possibly our 10th trip down the Kuranda range but we have exhausted all the things to do on the Tableland so it’s back down the range we go. The more you drive it ... read more

Guess who's back, back again. Brenny's back, tell a friend. I'm writing this blog for a second time, as my computer thought it would fun to, instead of saving the text like I asked it to, just bugger up and leave me back at square 1. So I apologise if it's a bit shorter than usual. Up early again today, somewhat begrudgingly in Michele's case, as she'd had very little sleep, and we were off to the docks. Despite the dodgy-looking overcast skies, we caught the 8:30am boat to Green Island, which is the only coral cay in the Great Barrier Reef to develop a rainforest. Luckily the sun decided to join us as the day went on. After arriving at about 9:30am, we had a very brief look around before our Glass Bottom Boat voyage ... read more
