This trip turned out to be the best and the worst, most awesome and disappointing all at the same time. I qualified as a scuba diver in Koh Tao with the express purpose of diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Top three on my list to see at the reef were; a turtle, a shark (preferably a reef shark not a great white!) and a little Nemo (a cute little orange and white stripped clown fish made famous by the film Finding Nemo). After my Sydney diving experience, where I lost confidence in the water, I was pretty nervous at going out again. Not to mention all the shark attacks around Australia being publicized in the last month or so. But diving was the reason I had come to Cairns so diving I would do. I ... read more

The Great Barrier Reef...yes the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef. Now this was going to surely be an experience of a lifetime! I want to first note that although I am not a marine biologist or a scuba/snorkel junky, I have an impressive resume of snorkels. I have been out in the Caribbean several times as well as the Galapagos Islands. So on to the GBR! Man was I excited...and later somewhat disappointed. I guess I can't be too negative, it was cool.. However it did not live up to my wildest dreams. I had to snorkel as diving was not an option because of certain health requirements, i.e. asthma, sinus problems. So we booked a large boat tour from Cairns as recommended by the travel agent we spoke to in town. I later came to ... read more

Well I am back home but have added some pictures. And I wanted to add some underwater pictures of the barrier reef. It was a two hour trip to the reef and we went to two spots and the wind was blowing and it was rough. We were snorkeling. Simone had rented an underwater camera and I don't know how she even held on to the camera, but it had a wrist strap. They say the spot to see the pristine Great Barrier Reef is now New Guinea. We were there in the off season, the time to see the reef is April through October. Anyway we did see some amazing coral. and some beautiful fish. The camera rental came with a disc with her pictures on it and some that had been taken previously by ... read more

Hey, So i did the great barrier reef today! It was pouring down again when we boarded the boat but it didn't rain too much throughout the day and the water was really warm and not too choppy. I did loadsa snorkelling - unfortunately didn't see any sharks or the turtle that is apparently always there! But did see loadsa cool bright coloured fish, just like you see in photos and finding nemo apparently - the guides kept banging on about that! I also did an introductory dive which was really cool. It lasted for about 20 mins and we went down quite far and saw loads more cool stuff - it was mainly cool looking fish and coral everywhere tho - i really enjoyed the sensation of diving tho! We also had a talk from ... read more

The Great Barrier Reef Saturday 24th January 2009 We made it! Last year when we were deciding where to go on our travels we both agreed that we wanted to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef. This was the dream and the reason we came to Queensland and today that dream was realised. We thought, due to being here in the wet season, the recent cyclone and the abundance of Box Jellies, we might not get the chance but we did! Today all the weather gods worked in our favour, it was the perfect sunny day out on the reef for snorkelling and we discovered that the Box Jellies haven’t been seen out there for over five years so we took the plunge! I did get stung, however, by a Blue Jelly, but more of that ... read more

Thanks to a birthday gift from Mom and Dad :-) I spent the first week in January learning to dive on the Great Barrier Reef! I can't imagine a better way to do it. The first two days were spent at a dive center in Cairns learning technique and taking tests. This is the wet season for Cairns, so the weather is usually pretty bad. Thankfully the first two days were sunny. Pool diving would have really sucked in thunderstorms. The training and tests went well and everyone in the class was heading for the reef. Wednesday morning started off really early with the boat leaving around 7am (ouch!) Thankfully they had coffee and breakfast to tied us over. The schedule for the next couple of days was four training dives and 5 fun dives. We ... read more

I arrived in Cairns January 1st. The flight was uneventful and I arrived well after dark, but the humidity slapped me in the face as soon as I stepped out through the airport doors. Even in the middle of the night it was shocking. All I wanted to do while I was in Cairns was dive. It had been my big dream in life, for as long as I can remember, to go diving in the Great Barrier Reef and I decided that I was going to spend my last 10 days completely in the water - no partying, no late nights, no crazy antics. Cairns is basically a boring town. You are forbidden from going in the ocean off the shore because of the stingers, and frankly its a gross looking beach anyway. The humidity ... read more

On Christmas Day, I was fortunate enough to go on this Christmas Cruise to the outer reef with a few of my friends, Shellie, and Nieve. We were on a massive yacht and we went to a pontoon on the Outer Reef that surrounds Knuckle Reef. We definitely had a blast on that excursion, but I will admit, my other two water adventures were way better when it came to what you were able to see while snorkeling. The pontoon had everything from snorkeling, to scuba lessons, to a glass bottom boat, and even a massive water slide into the ocean! It was definitely good fun :) Slept a bunch on the way to the reef, then I finally got my energy back once we got there. The 3 of us had quite a blast, but ... read more

We leave Singapore at 10pm aboard a Jetstar plane, the budget airline subsidiary of Qantas. It’s basic but comfortable, though we have to buy any alcoholic drinks to go with our food. We decide to indulge after our travel traumas (amazing how far you can stretch a story like that!!), C having some red wine & a Jim Beam, while M has a red label scotch whiskey (which he the proceeds to spill all over himself - what a waste!) We fly into Darwin and have to get off because of the strange customs/security arrangements but it does give us a chance to stock up on duty free - 2.25 litres per person which is very generous - and not what we were told in Singapore; get your act together guys! We then have a 2 ... read more
