Did the Southern Lakes scenic drive and stopped to look at Lake Birrabeen and Boomanjin. A Nissan had pulled to the side of the track to let someone past and slid off into the scrub. A 4WD hire car, full of backpackers had stopped to try to assist him when we turned up. Not having much luck. Rod said we could winch him out if they couldn’t “snatch” him out. They kept on trying and Rod stood back and watched. Finally I got him talking and he said there were too many cooks for him to interfere. I explained to the French tourists that were stuck to manouvere their car at right angles to the track and to try and to have a go at getting up themselves. When I explained why (translating from Rod’s murmurs), they got the drift that we knew what we were talking about. When they finally got the car in place and had a go, they got their front wheels up, and Rod got the winch set up with the snatch block and pulled them up onto the track. By this time they were so grateful they gave us kisses. Everyone cheered. By this time there
were about 6 cars lined up behind the 1st car that had stopped to help - and 45mins later.
We continued on the drive to Dilli Village where we where confronted with some Italian tourists that had driven too fast onto the (5kmph recommended) bridge and hit the wooden hand railing and broken it and managed to get their front passenger wheel over the safety railing at the bottom. The car was sitting on 3 wheels and a hub! 3 NSW cars came up behind him and had a look too. It was decided to give it a push back on with all the blokes - and triumph! The fuel line was damaged so quick smart pushed it off the bridge so no fuel leakage into the creek.
Continued on to Eurong and had lunch at the bakery. Eurong is now a resort with a bakery and Laundromat and tour buses. Totally different than 15 years ago. Drove along Eastern beach to Wabby Lake. The rangers were working at the toilets there and had just killed a huntsman spider in the ladies toilet and removed a carpet snake from under the same toilet. Walked the 2.3kms to Hammerstone
Sandblow and ran down the hill to Lake Wabby. Rod had a swim and ran down the hill and dove into the water. Alex was tempted, but didn’t want to get wet. Kate had no such qualms and ended up going in with her clothes on. An English tourist didn’t want her clothes wet so she had no qualms of stripping down to her underwear and having a swim in bra and undies. On the way back about 2.4km’s through the trees we heard, then saw an F1 fly over. Raced the high tide back to Eurong had an ice-cream, checked emails and headed back to camp through the back of the resort. The campground is a lot busier with about 5 backpacker groups, who got rather noisy after tea and a few drinks.
