We left Yeppoon and ended up in Emerald by about 2.30. On the page of the map i was looking at it looked as if we were about a quarter of the way across Australia but when looking at the big map we were only about 10%, Australia really is a massive country! We arrived in Emerald and it was absolutely boiling, instead of over heating in Clyde we decided to try go into Sapphire and RubyVale and try and get me a sapphire nose stud made, We were too lazy to actually fossick for the stones so bought a very cute little sapphire for the bargain price of $14, unfortunately the shop that could set nose studs was shut so it's in the bag ready for a trip to the jewellery quarter on our return! ... read more

Hi everyone from Emerald We have just spent 4 nights at Carnarvon Gorge, where we were out of range of TV, phone and internet. We drove in on 26km of dirt track, the first our van has been on, with a few fords. The views were great, and we did all the walking tracks, including one day to the end of the main track and all the points of interest off it on the way back, which ended up being 23.6km, a long way for us! At least that track was flat, following the stream, with over 50 river crossings. We also climbed to the Boolimba Bluff lookout, up a very steep track, another day. We stayed at the Takarakka Bush Resort, which was great. Before that we had 2 nights at the big 4 camp ... read more

Hello All - Left home 11 days ago. Innisfail Mt Surprise (4 days) The Lynd Junction Fletcher's Creek (o'nite) Charters Towers Belyando Crossing (o'nite) Clermont Theresa Creek Dam (4 days) Emerald (arrived today). The more the days went on, the colder it got!! Lowest so far was 0.4 degrees o'nite outside minimum at Theresa Creek Dam. Even inside the van it was only 4.3 degrees !!! Yesterday's Maximum never made it past 17 degrees !!! Fairly uneventful trip as far as Clermont - only saw 1 emu, lots of road-kill, HEAPS of road trains. Actually got the boat off the roof of Geoff's car at the dam (what a mission that was!) and went after some redlaw (supposedly running rampant there). Hardly caught anything for 2 days - ... read more

The last while has been busy, trying to fit everything into my short stay. Two weekend's ago, me and Megan went to Yeppoon to stay with her parent's. Since Kay (Megan's mom) was in Brisbane when I arrived in Yeppoon, I had yet to see her. So we spent friday evening visiting and got up early Saturday morning for fishing. Unfortunately, the only thing I caught was a sunburn. Kay & John each caught one fish, but the were no bigger than 6-8 inches. Apparently it was one of the worst fishing days they had seen (just my luck!) Saturday afternoon we drove to Rockhampton (about half an hour from Yeppoon) to stay with Natika (another friend). We had a girls night on the town and returned to Emerald on Sunday. Since we were running out ... read more

Life is starting to go back to normal. The flood waters peaked on wednesday of last week and slowly began receding. Since the railway tracks into Emerald are located higher than the bridge and escaped flooding, there was a train that would bring people into and out of town a few times a day as of Thursday. On Sunday, Megan and myself were excited...we planned a train trip into the big city of Emerald! We hadn't seen any friend's on that side of the river and hadn't seen the 'city lights' for a week! hahaha (Emerald has a population of about 13,000). Unfortunately, we found out that the main bridge going into town was open on Sunday. We weren't able to make the train trip, but we could drive ourselves. The water went below the bridge ... read more

The rain finally stopped over the weekend, but the flooding is well under way. Emerald is a town that typically sees drought and dry weather. Just outside of town there is a lake with a dam. The water is flowing about 5m over the dam and the water has to go somewhere. Many homes and business in town are several feet under water. The river is now at 15.3 meters and they are hoping that it has peaked. Nobody really knows. The good news is that we live in a suburb just outside of town that is quite a bit higher than town. We had a few issues when all the rain was falling (and the neighbour's run-off was coming into our yard). But now we are fine. The town is completely cut off. All the ... read more

For those you have been to Emerald, or who know the area, you won't believe me when I say it's been raining, and raining and raining and raining. Emerald is usually very dry and has been in drought for years. But in the last 6 days it's been storming and raining and flooding (I'll put a few pictures on facebook) Last week at work was pretty good, fairly busy and I learned a lot. On friday night, I knew Megan had planned a small bbq with a few friends. I didn't know any details. It ended up being a surprise bbq for me (the few people I know in town showed up as a surprise). I went out to the dam (aka a lake about 10 minutes from town) to go water skiing on saturday during ... read more
