Over four stops we travelled 1200 kms north into QLD. Straight up Thunderbolts Way to Goondiwindi then continued north on the Leichhart Hwy until we turned west at the Tropic of Capricorn. With each day the weather was milder. Finally we were able to unclench our tight frozen muscles and relax in the sunshine of 24 degrees.... read more

After listening to some very talented up and coming Country and Western singers at the Mareeba Rodeo showgrounds we ventured south to a town called Ravenshoe, pronounced Ravens “oh” and not Raven “shoe” we were fortunate to arrive just in time for their local annual carnival and street parade complete with about 15 floats! Very quaint and entertaining. There were even fireworks to round off the day but unfortunately Pete and I were in the pub watching the Kiwis losing against the Kangaroos and missed all the fun and action. Today we set off south once more to travel along the inland route to Charters Towers which amounted to several hundreds of kilometres of red dirt and gum trees and not too much else. The guy at the information office in Ravenshoe tried to persuade us ... read more

As we were already inland, it was a foregone conclusion that we would continue driving to Emerald to explore the Central Highlands and the Gemfields.Emerald, Sapphire and Rubyvale are all sapphire mining towns and that’s what the area is famous for. Emerald itself is a curious place: the first thing you see when you drive into town is a zillion backpackers camping under a railway bridge. It’s actually a 20-hour free camping area provided by the council. We realised why it’s free when we woke up in the middle of the night: the bridge is used around the clock by freight trains and heavy trucks drive past on the adjacent highway. Nevertheless, it was a cool little place with running water and a BBQ. The next morning we went for a wander around town. Despite being ... read more

Wednesday 4th Jan Checked out the lookout over Fairbairn Dam - fantastic view - then onto Emerald - visited the largest painting in the world on an easel with the Emeralds giant Van Gogh Sunflower painting. Visited the lovely original 1900 Emerald railway Station which is still in use - just beautiful. Sunflowers were a staple crop in Emerald until the land was needed for the fast growing population for the mining industry. There are still Sunflower crops in the outer areas of Emerald where the land is dryer as Sunflowers need very little water to survive. Emerald was very badly effected by the Jan 2011 floods and we saw the water mark up to the top of the counter in the Coles shopping centre. It is hard for us to imagine how high these floods ... read more

Tuesday 3rd Jan 2012 On the way to Emerald we called into the little town of Coppabella to have morning tea and took the photo of the boab trees along the edge of the road as well as the artwork on the lamposts - these artworks are all along the main road. Booked into Lake Maraboon and what an entrance to a caravan park - we drove over the wall of Fairbairn Dam to get to the park - as it was not busy we were given the choice of where to park so picked a spot which faced the lake - just beautiful - though the temperature has got a little hot (38 degrees) and the sun comes right into the front of the van so have had to put up an extra roof to ... read more

11 April - Banana. The site was behind the pub. In fact, the town consists of 2 gas stations, 1 pub and a post office. We waited until the post office opened, bought 2 postcards to send to the grandchildren, wrote and posted to them. Then on to Carnarvon Gorge National Park. Our Tomtom refused to find it, but we had a map. By now we have towed the caravan for over 1,100 km and the car has done about 2,100km. Easy to mount up when you are having fun. Carnarvon is a national park created around a sanstone range of mountains which has has a deep gorge carved through it. As the sandstone retains water, it creates a river that runs for year round. Valuable in Australia. However, they've had lots of rain over the ... read more

I have been busy, busy, busy with work as of late and I have only just recently obtained the internet so hopefully these updates can be more consistent. Things at the mine have been pretty steady up until now, we have had almost a month and a half of wet weather meaning minimal drilling has been done due to the shear volume of water falling. We were forced not to go into work one day because the dry creek beds swelled up to cover the roads so we got to sleep in. It has been fun yet again to drive around the mine site down old access tracks to check site access. A large portion of the day was spent washing the mud off of our trucks, a testament to how much fun it is to ... read more
