We woke on Sunday morning to a bit of a dust storm. IT was slowly building so it ended up being a good day to leave as we had ourselves on the outskirts of town before it really hit hard. Was a bit of a struggle to drive at times with the vehicle and trailer catching the wind. We drove through Windorah which was our first stop for the day at around 9.30am. A pie, a coffee and top up the fuel and out! At the next stop (Quilpie) I discovered that the same tyre on the Paj had finally given up the ghost i.e. dead flat, so I had to do a quick change out for another tyre that already had a plug in it - so far so good with that one (touch wood)! ... read more

Stage 2 of our Central Australia to South Australia Trip...no longer going down the Birdsville Track Cunnamulla to Wilcannia Monday 19 September It was a beautiful day with clear blue skies but we stuck to our decision to go south to Cunnamulla and not west to Quilpie/Birdsville. Craig gave us a mud map of all the environmental features from Charleville to Bourke, an incredible bloke who not only has an Economics Degree but also a PhD in Anthropology and is on the board of the local Catchment Group. We said our goodbyes and headed into town to pick up bread and some cream buns (no, I didn’t have one!). We also fuelled up. 10kms out of town we saw the Angellala Bridge Explosion Site where in 2014 a truck carrying 53 tonnes of ammonium nitrate caught ... read more

Well Cunnamulla was further away from our last stop of St George than we wanted to travel in a day, so the little town of Bollon (still don’t know how the locals pronounce that) beckoned with an enticing free camp beside the river. The little rascals at Bollon promoted the free camp area as having free showers(plural) and toilets, but when Geoff walked to the free shower (singular) it was about 350 mts away from the main camp area and incorporated the free dunny! Oooh they do play with the truth in the country. At the end of the day we are self contained (sort of), the facilities were not required and the location was very good with the river just a couple of mts. from the door. Geoff saw some other travellers putting in some ... read more

We've nearly completed our loop around S/W Qld and one of the experiences on my bucket list was to soak in a hot natural bore bath. I had already found a few but they were so modernised and smelling of chlorine I simply felt like I was in any old spa bath. So my prayers were answered by camping at the Working Sheep and Cattle Station at Charlotte Plains just 50kms East of Cunnamulla. Robyn runs the station on her own after her husband passed away 2 years ago and with the drought, has been chasing the tourist dollar to supplement her income. The property is the size of the island of Singapore, so she is a real trooper, not wanting to give it up as she was born and bred there.... read more

After leaving that dust storm behind us in Eulo we were impressed to find a caravan park with green grass, gardens and clean amenities. We only stayed two nights here by the Warrego River but it felt very relaxing and even luxurious. This is what happens when you've been bush for so long, the little comforts become welcomed treats. TV reception was one requirement. Dave was happy to be able to watch the Footy finals.... read more

What a delightful little town, of only 50 people, the salt of the earth they are. They welcome travellers and have a lovely free camp spot by the Paroo River. We rested up here 4 nights after being in the big smoke of Charleville where the population climbs above 3000. Not sure if you'll ever be able to get us back on the East Coast folks, all a bit too hectic for us.... read more
