...forgot to mention that the local TV network - Prime - filmed Peter performing the athletic feat of climbing over the railing on the wharf, going down the ladder and leaping onto the moving pontoon below. This was shown on the news that night. Not quite his 15minutes of fame - but we are waiting for the movie offers to flood in...)... read more

Had to stop the previous ramblings - time ran out at the internet cafe...(we do have a computer on board - but takes quite alot of power, is very slow and 1 gig of downloads seems to disappear at an alarming rate - so less stressful to leg it up the road and pay to transfer the stress to the internet cafe!) We have now finally made it over the border - we are currently anchored in Southport, Southern Queensland, in the delightfully named "Bum's Bay" and have met up with our friends Rob and Barbara. They are on their boat Robara and we will travel north in company - at least as far as the Whitsundays. (Travelling in company means sharing the decisions, the dramas - and copious amounts of food and alcohol at night!) ... read more

At the very first, when we got off the bus, we both had a feeling we were going to love Coolangatta. A gorgeous little seaside town which was not geared up for backpackers at all (what a breath of fresh air), the place was unusually packed because of the Quiksilver Surf Pro competition which was on for the duration of the time we were there. Talk about good planning! We booked into the Coolangatta Sands Hotel right in the centre of town, which, on first inspection, looked promising enough. Sharing our room with 4 blokes (girls, thats not as appealing as it may sound, picture, smelly socks, surfboards and snoring) the place seemed reasonable enough. However, our generally optimistic view deteriorated when as soon as we went to bed, the loud bass from the nightclub downstairs ... read more

This weekend Sabrina, Matt and I went to Coolangatta for the first time. It is by far my favorite beach. It's so beautiful. We got up early on Saturday morning and caught the train, as soon as we got there we laid on the beach and went swimming we then had lunch and went back to the beach, to a different spot free of Blue Bottles, for more swimming. When we couldn't handle anymore sun we did a little shopping and then hopped back on the train. We had a wonderful day! ... read more

Having left the mountains we headed back to the coast...This is where our Australia beach trip begins as we plan to make our way slowly down the coast to Sydney. Our first stop was at Kirra beach in Coolangatta - south of surfers paradise. We decided to give surfers a miss as its described as 'aggressively superficial' and somewhere to avoid if you looking for peace and quiet. While in the area we did take in Snappers rock and Danger point, enjoying a walk at each (but no sunbathing as the weather's taken a turn for the worse!). I enjoyed watching the surfers and was in awe of what some of them can do - having dipped my toe in the water however i decided i wasn't up for trying to join them (it was bloody ... read more

Wet and Wild We left Brisbane at around 9am and headed to the Gold Coast, our destination for the day being Wet and Wild. I misdirected us to 'White Water World' and we ended up standing in a queue for general enquiries for nearly 10 minutes before Mike checked with a guy in front of us whether we were at 'Wet and Wild' and he told us that we needed to get off at the next junction on the highway - oops! We finally arrived at Wet and Wild around 10.30am. We were both very eager to get on the rides and made a plan to start at one end of the park and finish at the other so as not to miss anything. Our first ride of the day to warm us up (or should ... read more

Ah G'Day, It's time for an update from Tweed Heads, at a lovely campsite just north of the border with New South Wales. There are two elements to this site that shine through. Firstly, it boasts what is probably the warmest pool in Autralia (in winter time anyway). It's like a bath compared to some of the the others we've been in. Therefore we spent quite a lot of time in it and the kids loved it. They particularly like that game where daddy lies on the bottom and we stand on him. Secondly the site houses the nicest blue rinse brigade yet. We only had to drop a towel and somone would dart from nowhere at a speed faster than seemed physically possible. We received advice about the van, constant exchanges about our 'lovely children', ... read more

Did you ever get that feeling when you were in school? It may have been at the end of term or school year and the exams would come around, your teachers had the expectation that you would indeed pick up your school books and start revising. Well my plan was to do everything else that I should do except that, so I would clean my room, wash, and listen to Dunc perform some of his poetry. Have you not heard it before? Ask him about it, really emotional stuff. So my education has flown by and that same feeling has returned, not by a new form of school revision but by writing these damn blogs all the time. So with a clean van, undercrackers and a sonnet in my heart I will continue to inform you ... read more

Sorry I haven't updated this for a while, when I get more time to add some other entries and upload my pictures I will. I'm back at Coolangatta for a few days with my sister Claire who is out on holiday. She's had pretty bad jet lag for the last few days so it hasn't been much fun for her so far but she seems to be coming round now and since it's cracking the flags here on the gold coast, even though it's winter time I get the feeling she'll come round in no time. Keep an eye out for pictures of my new found friends and family from Home Hill. Hope everyone is ok. Love Calvino ... read more
