Today was my visit up to the world's oldest rain forest in Cape Tribulation. Almost. First stop on the way is a small wildlife park where we were introduced to some seriously cute Koalas. Asleep in their trees, not a care in the world. One of them woke up to yawn but all this was a bit too much for him so he went for another little snooze. It was then time to stroke a baby croc and an old python. I'm not sure if it was my imagination playing tricks but the snake seemed to be edging closer and closer to me which meant a little journey to the back of the crowd was in order. I wandered around the sanctuary , smiled at a crocodile, waved at some wallabies and then.... kangaroos! They exist! ... read more

Made is to Cape Tribulation - stunning rainforest, including LOTS of rain to keep it thriving. Staying in a beautiful resort here, elegant room with natural wood, some curtains, some not. Saw some clear break this morning so went for a decent walk - no crocs yet. A cassowary walked through the parking lot! Internet connection too slow to upload pictures from here. ... read more

Post dive trip we headed North through Daintree to Cape Tribulation. The drive included a so called ‘ferry’ crossing which basically involved driving the van onto a metal platform which slowly travelled on a cable from one shore to another. You could practically jump the distance, I reckoned with a decent ramp we'd have made it and saved a lot of time but Xan wasn't so keen. Our campsite was brilliantly basic with nothing but a narrow section of rain forest separating it from the beach. At night after an amazing sunset we saw some absolutely huge bats flying above us and a creature in a tree beside us that looked like a cross between a possum and a rat. We awoke in the morning to discover our ’thongs’ left outside overnight had been sabotaged (that‘s ... read more

Today I went on a tour with Tony's Tropical Tours up to Bloomfield Falls. Our driver Dave was a font of knowledge and loads of fun, pointing out all sorts of birds along the way and explaining lots of plants and history of the area. It was a pretty long day - I was picked up at 7.10am and we hit the road to collect the other guests - 5 others in total. Our first stop was at the Daintree River where we did a river cruise with Bruce Belcher's Daintree River Cruises. We saw quite a few smaller crocodiles, and a couple of tree snakes and different birds. From there, we headed further north towards Cape Tribulation, stopping at Alexandra Lookout on the way for photos, and then we had morning tea and had a ... read more

We have had an interesting couple of days in our little motor home. We left Port Douglas and drove north to Mossman with the intention of walking Mossman Gorge. However, the car park was full to overflowing, the tour times listed - it all seems very organised now. We decided to leave it this time, another thing for OTWB (on the way back). Instead we did a foodshop in Mossman and drove on about 25 klms to Wonga Beach where we were booked for two nights. It was a nice caravan park, lots of trees, pool, the beach at the door, friendly campers and, a surprise, lots of peacocks! Our neighbour fed them every afternoon and they'd all gathered at her door - beautiful birds, males and a few peahens as well. Even they were pretty ... read more

Today we left Port Douglas and drove to Cpae Tribulation. On the way we stopped at Mossman Gorge, I had read it was a good place for a swim and it really was beautiflul, the problem was neither of us had our swim stuff with us so we just rested on the rocks for a while and watched everyone else enjoying the fresh cold water. Cape Tribulation is in the Daintree National Park which is one of the oldest rainforests in the world and dates back to when there was one supercontinent before Australia broke off into its own continent millions of years ago. We have to get a car ferry over into the park, which I am glad about as there are constant croc warnings and I wouldn't fancy wading in this river to see ... read more
