snorkelling Dear Grace & Mag,
I know I haven't blogged for a while but I wanted to make sure I took pictures of all different things to show you what my life is / will be like in Cairns for the next few months. I've been here for nearly 2 months already - that's gone crazy quick. In the first week up here I had a lot of people I knew from the East Coast and it was the last stop altogether before people moved on of went home. Most of the first week was going out together and nursing hangovers by the lagoon during the day. The lagoon is amazing, right by the beach so you can lay in the pool and look at the horizon and plenty of space for everyone to lay and relax around it. There's live music there at the weekends and I did an aqua aerobics class in it the other day. Although I did a lot of partying, I also had promised myself that I would work hard to find a job and somewhere to live within the first week. As I am quite a determined little person I managed to do just that!
Was so so happy! I got my job in a lovely restaurant on the first Saturday and went out to celebrate with 2 really nice guys in my hostel - really clicked with them and miss a bit although I only knew them for 5 days - and met a couple of other friends that were still here out as well. The day after I viewed a couple of houses and had my first official shift at work in the evening and the day after that (on the Monday) I moved into one of the houses. Most productive 3 days ever! Never been so excited to unpack and use coat hangers! hehe I have taken a few pictures of the house and me at work so you can see them. The view from the restaurant I work at is amazing...right on the water...coulnd't be working in a more beautiful setting. 6 weeks down the line I still really like my job just as much as I did when I first got it. My housemates are really nice too. A couple of people have moved out and in since I have been there but the bunch in the house right now
have been there for a few weeks now and I think are planning to stay which is good. We all get on very well and laugh a lot round the table, watch films together and go out and do trips so it's all worked out perfectly with the living situation.
Every now and then people I know from before come up to Cairns which is really nice because just when I think I don't know many people here, someone arrives. It doesn't matter too much really because I am working quite a few hours which is good. And the longer I am there the more I am getting to know them. Everyone seems to have a great sense of humour at work. Lots of banter all the time which I love. Had a staff party not long ago and that is definitely a night to remember! Some of the dance moves that broke out...OMG so funny. People spinning on the floor 'break-dancing', everyone in their own dance world...was hilarious...really good fun.
As there's lots on offer around this area I'm aiming to do activities spread out in between work to break it all up a bit. I have

hair flick done a couple of things already but there is so much more on the list. I have already done snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef which was better than I could have imagined - despite the fact it was really windy and made us a bit cold and seasick. I am definitely going to go again at one point, hopefully on a day that's more still. I went with Claudia, one of my house mates and the first thing we saw was a turtle! And the fish of all shapes and sizes were deep, velvet purples, turquoise and yellow - was amazing! So lucky to be able to casually do that on my day off work! Another activity I have done was only 2 days ago when 4 of us hired a car and went around to see different waterfalls. It was Claudia, me, Jess and Gemma (who I met in Sydney when I was there..and now they're here..yay!) We went to Crystal Cascades which is very close to the centre of Cairns - 20/25min drive. Had a little walk up the creek and saw the falls at the end and paddled in the water for a bit which was
fresh! Our next stop was 2 hours away called Millaa Millaa falls. This is supposedly where Peter Andre filmed Mysteriuos Girl. Did some hair flicking haha - think I could be scouted for Herbal Essence soon 😊 I went right in the water although it was freezing but I couldn't come here and not go in. Swam up to the waterfall...by this point I didn't feel cold anymore as my skin had gone numb so all good. The spray from the water hitting the sunlight created a rainbow over the water (hopefully you can see it in the photos) felt like a fairytale! Definitely worth the drive. One the way back we went to another place called Emerald Creek Falls but unfortunately couldn't stay long because I had to get back for work. We were all so impressed with it though that we want to go back and spend the whole day there. To get there we had 8km of bumpy, unmade road, and I mean bumpy! Felt like Fraser Island again. It was so beautiful plenty of space amongst the trees, and walking track to see the falls and plenty of BBQ facilities.
I've done other little things
like go to the cinema and visited the Botanic Gardens. I went to the gardens by bike as they're about 6km away so a bit far to walk but wasn't really that impressed. There isn't many flowers, just plants so all green no colourful ones. I think the ones I went to near Brisbane were so good that others might seem a bit of a disappointment now. Was still ok, had a little walk and sunbathed and did some gym there. Another not-so-good thing is that I got completely eaten alive by 4 million tiny teeny sand flies - so itchy.
It was my friend, Ami's birthday a couple of weeks ago so I treated her to a nice dinner. Felt nice to get dressed up to go to a good restaurant instead of serving in one hehe. There were 4 of us Ami, Claudia, me and Emily. Unfortunately Ami isn't here anymore, she's in Sydney now but I still speak to her a lot 😊
I suppose that's Cairns so far in a nutshell - working a lot and don't want to do too much because I want to save up for further travels after Australia. Go
out out probably once every 1 or 2 weeks. People at work good, housemates good, Jess = good!!
Love you lots xx
