Well, it's official! Australia is a slacker travelers paradise! After about 5 days in Port Douglas diving and swimming in our hostel pool (not much else to do except drink with the locals!) I decided to hit Cairns with my new awesome Dutch friends, Marcella and Saskia! I met Saskia while diving my last day in Port Douglas and she said they were heading to a great hostel in Cairns called Gilligans, and had an empty 8 bed dorm to themselves! Awesome! We had 6 nights with just the 3 of us completely taking over a really clean, nice room with our own bathroom! We even got FRESH TOWELS every day! LUXURY!
It was so awesome to lean back and relax for a little while with some new fun girlfriends, and forget the stresses of traveling and planning and touring and etc! We did some shopping - it was time to revamp the wardrobe, not only am I sooo sick of those 5 shirts I've been rotating, but they are looking a little ragged! It was an absolute blast grocery shopping and cooking fabulous meals for each other - yes - I just said it was a blast grocery shopping
and cooking! You wouldn't believe how much you start to miss the little things like that! One night we went to see the movie Into the Wild, about a traveler disappearing in Alaska, which reminds us all to stay on the marked paths....or make sure you go with ZB! 😊 Most other nights we went out with some "old" friends we had met in other parts of our travels, so our social calendar was rather full! I won't bore you with the stories of each night, but it went a little something like this: Get ready with the ladies while giggling and talking about cute boys and travels. Hit the happy hour and/or dinner at a local spot. Meet up with old friends at club. Dance! Meet 5 new friends. Dance More! Grab 3am snack of pizza or kebabs. Somehow find our hostel again and sleep until noon. Repeat.
Our hostel also had a huge bar and dance club attached to it (it was more a hotel and resort, I'm telling you, LUXURY!) so we ended up spending a few nights there dancing our faces off and meeting more fun people! Still most of the people I'm meeting are from England and now New Zealand. I've met about 5 Americans this entire journey! Come on you guys!?!?! Get your passports out and get OUT there! I'm pleased to say that most of my new friends say I'm the Coolest American they've Ever Met. Yeah! I also met my first Australian Brett Favre fan! He was at the bar sporting his Favre jersey so I RAN up to him and we starting chatting like old best friends!
My last day in town we went down to the lagoon on the beach - the beaches there are so polluted and even worse, full of crocodiles, that they have built this shallow huge lagoon pool right on the beach so you have grassy knolls, water fountains, clean pool water, and all the beach views! Pretty great idea! Now that I'm refreshed and relaxed, onto to Melbourne and ready to meet up with my Oktoberfest friends and Mark and Jonny again!
