Had a small getaway for 6 days, mainly to see John's Mum Von and catch up with a few friends and family. Arrived on Wednesday and picked up our hire car, rained virtually all day. Headed straight to Nambour to see Von and catch up with doctor and case manager etc. Von is still in Sundale Nursing Home and being looked after beautifully - frail and fading but still hasn't lost her sense of humor. Stayed with our cousins Lindsay and Gaye, was lovely to come home each day and relax and hang out with them. Had a couple of nights with our niece Shelley and her husband Dean and their children Summer and Molly - so nice to see where they are living now in North Lakes and also to see their new business venture ... read more

13th of February-So after my depressing goodbye to Malou and many early mornings I had a nice long lie in in my beautifully air conditioned hostel :) I then began to feel quite lazy as the afternoon dawned on me so decided to do something with my day and went on the organised hostel walk to the Cape Byron lighthouse. So many people have told me to do this as it's supposed to be lovely....and it was. I met loads of friendly people on the walk, one of them being an English girl called Jess. We chatted loads and had selfies on the beach on the way home....she's got this real nasty looking bite on the back of her leg though that's making her leg swell...looks ming. I decided to keep my shoes on on the ... read more

Geo: -27.4676, 153.02872 Hours in Brisbane (sans children)WHY GOBrisbane/Brissie/Brisvegas is capital city of the state of Queensland, it has grown a lot in the past decade and has a lot offer gastro and arts wise.A few of my Aussie friends thought it was strange choice but then I remind then I'm European and city breaks is definitely one of our things! It's an amazingly pedestrian and cycle friendly city, access to the water is refreshing and the use of the river for public transport is great.WHEN TO GO?I am told August is an ideal month to visit the Sunshine State, with an average top temperature of 24C in Brisbane; but we went in June because we had a benevolent grandmother who wanted to take her grand-children off our hands! (We did try in go in February as ... read more

Nick: So, this is the final blog update from dear old Oz, and I am writing it as we sit on a comfy leather sofa in Brisbane International Airport with a few hours to kill before our flight. What oh what have we been up to since our last update? Well, our final two days in Magnetic Island were fairly quiet. On our penultimate day there - our last full day on the island - we decided that after the previous two days' let-downs we weren't going to bother trying to do any snorkelling; there was still a fairly strong breeze coming in from over the sea, and the 'white horses' visible on the choppy water suggested that it would have been yet another futile attempt. Perhaps we would be able to make better use of ... read more

I don’t know why I was so fascinated with Steve Irwin, the crocodile hunter, but he always made me laugh. His death was a sad event nine years ago but his zoo lives on. It isn’t a large zoo but features some of Australia’s favorites. They have an animal hospital located close by and you can visit it too, however, our time didn’t allow. Spent some time looking at his memorial that comprises all kinds of items that people sent. There were khaki shirts that were signed by mourners. Our guide said that after his death, cars were lined up along the entrance to his zoo and the employees brought out the shirts for people to sign. We saw a crocodile and bird show and had time to visit the animals before returning to the ship. ... read more

Thursday 30th April 2015 The rain came down quite heavily last night, hardly letting up at all. So it continued for the morning but Rags was keen to get the Thermomix repaired so he left Judy in the van to do her uni marking while he went to find the Brisbane Thermomix headquarters. He found the trip a little arduous as heavy rain was falling and there were many trucks on the freeway for the 40 odd kms to where the Thermomix office is. When the gps told him he was there it took another hour, and a lot of walking before he finally found it. A highway now breaks the road in two and it was by chance the address was eventually found. It only took 30 mins to fix, just cost Rags a total ... read more

Well....e-tickets! We picked up the "tickets" today. And they're not really tickets but itinerary print outs. It seems a token gestures to remind us of the work the travel agent has done, but nonetheless we have them and she helped us out. It has also made it seem very real - only about a week to go! Seems the scale of the trip might have dawned on Deaks. He came down from bed last night crying and worried that the plane might drop out of the sky into the ocean. Poor little bloke. We don't even watch the news with the kids but they hear about things. "Singapore airlines is one of the best in the world" I say. "you've got more chance of being hit by a car or getting sick from a bad potato!" ... read more
