Still very hot on our cycle this morning though it was very cloudy and looked like a storm was brewing. I don’t think I have mentioned thus far, but Luke (the boss) cooks us all lunch every day. His reasoning is that he doesn’t pay as much as what Rowena and Jae could earn if they worked for the mines doing environmental work. Luke, as I mentioned is slightly alternative (hippy) at times, which means lunches are full of lentils, chickpeas, spices, veg and salad he grows and eggs from his chicken etc, all really healthy and very yummy. So far we have had a range of salads, soups, lentecha, egg wraps and today we had my favourite so far, a spinach frittatas with salad, it tasted very yummy. I am trying to make a mental note of meals I can add to my repeater as all of them a very simple, yummy and healthy.
After lunch I got to go out on a site visit to Candy soils which collects food, chicken and green waste and composts it and sells it on as high quality compost or lower grade bagged soil dependant on the process. The
site was around 30min drive away and we were going to do to some odour monitoring as there have been a few complaints by local residents about the smell in the past. We got to site, at the height of the day (1.30pm) so it was hot, but for safety regs we had to wear long trousers, long sleeves a hat and steel tow capped boats. When I was England and asking to do as much site work as possible I hadn’t factored in the heat to deal with! I was very glad I had thought ahead when I was packing in the UK and packed my light weight walking trousers, so I didn’t have to wear jeans!
Despite the heat, which actually wasn’t as bad as I expected, it was good to get out on site and see some of the things I had been learning about. We walked around the site perimeter, noting down the strength, types and persistence of smells and then headed into the site, walking in between 10ft high long rows (known as windrows) of composting material noting the same things. We had to doge a few fan sprinkler trucks which were driving round
trying to keep the compost wet and prevent it catching on fire, though really I wouldn’t have minded being sprayed by one! We talked to the site manager, a friend of Luke’s briefly, dodged a far few flies then headed back to the office around 4pm. I am very pleased to note that we experienced very few ‘offensive odours’ on site, if composted properly (to the correct recipes and methods) there should be no adverse smell. Once back I jumped on my bike and cycled home. As I had expected, when I got home Rowena giggled and said my face had been dusted by compost, and when I removed my sunglasses, there was an outline where the dirt was, this amused me greatly but I didn’t fancy sporting the look for long and quickly dived into a very nice cold shower!
Later in the evening Rowena and I headed off for a very refreshing and relaxed swim at the pool. Came home, we all had dinner together chatted about tomorrows plan and then I headed to bed, rather shattered.
Learning for today…….. I must remember environmental work is not an industry to make a fashion statement in –
walking trousers, steel toe cap boots and a light dusting of compost……attractive!
