Travelling from one place to another with children in tow can be a daunting task. Even the most well-behaved child can be quite a handful during a trip.
This can usually be attributed to the change in environment, moving from a place that they know to an unfamiliar area can be disruptive to their routine.
However, children do not have to make the idea of travelling sound too hard, you just have to plan ahead in order to take care of any contingency that may arise.
When travelling, the safety of your toddler is of utmost importance and listed below are a few tips for ensuring that your child is perfectly safe while on a journey
Be prepared
While travelling, your child will most likely come in contact with dirty objects or surfaces that are full of germs. Therefore, it is a good idea to pack sanitary wipes that can get them clean in a pinch.
These wipes can also be used in cleaning spills or any mess that your toddler might create. If possible, you should try to wash their hands thoroughly before giving them food items to eat.
Medical emergencies
A
first aid kit is one of the essential things you should pack when travelling. It does not necessarily have to be a large kit, a small pack that can be tucked into your bag is ideal.
The first aid kit should contain band-aids, disinfectant, nasal drops, thermometer and the like. If your child has allergies, then their allergy medication should always be available.
Car seat
If you are travelling by air, and picking up a hire car or being collected by friends or family when you land, you need to ensure you have organised a correctly fastened
car seat. By law, all children under the age of 7 must be seated in a rear or forward-facing restraint. This is to ensure that your child is well protected as you continue to travel. You can take your own car seat or use one provided by the hire car company.
All children must be secured in a properly fastened child restraint that is
correctly fitted and adjusted for their age and size. Ensure you take, or are provided with, the right seat for your child.
Keep your contact details on your child
Your child can easily get lost in an unfamiliar place, so it is a safe choice to have your contact details stashed in their pockets or visibly attached to their clothing. You can also get your toddler to memorise pertinent information like your name, their name and your phone number.
There is no telling where your toddler might wander off to no matter how vigilant you are and it will save you a lot of stress knowing that you can be easily contacted if your child happens to get lost.
Pack snacks and treats
Giving your child some food or snacks is an excellent way to keep them occupied during your trip. This will keep them from jumping around in the aisles or sticking their heads out of the car window.
You can pack electronic devices containing their favourite movies and games. You can also pack colouring books, crayons and blocks if you are trying to limit your child's screen time.
Keeping them occupied will make them relaxed, and they would be less likely to cause trouble, allowing you to enjoy your trip.
Avoid over-packing
While it might seem like a good idea to pack everything your toddler might need, carrying all the extra luggage around can be very stressful. The key is to pack only the essential items and leave out all the unnecessary things that your toddler would never use.
The reason why packing light is best is so that you would be able to have good control and hold onto your kids. Trying to juggle a lot of baggage and your child will not only stress you out, but it can also expose your child to the risk of wandering off.
So pack considerably, or employ a means of transporting your luggage that will still allow you to be able to control your child.
While travelling with a toddler can be a trying time, you and your family can have a fun and bonding experience on a journey. All you have to do is to protect your child and pack the essentials, and you can be assured that you will enjoy a safe trip with your family.
