On Wednesday, 24th, we anchored in Darwin Harbour, at the Waterfront Wharf. We were able to disembark the ship and walked along the walkway , past Stokes warf to the lovely Waterfront precinct and up into the city. Fletcher wanted to find a bank to get some cash, so we wandered along the Mall and eventually found the ANZ bank. It was already warm with a hotter day to follow. We found a taxi which took us to the Aviation Museum near Darwin Airport. We had missed this last time we were here in 2020. The main attraction here is the B-52 bomber which takes up the whole of the enormous hangar. It looks like the mother hen with all the other planes nestled under its wings. I Ihad not realised how big it is. There ... read more

Sunday had a walk into Alice Springs township...very quiet...but quite a few indigenous people about! Was going to walk on a bit more remote walking track but decided against it...too much bad shit happening in Alice at present! Last night witnessed an incident at Uncles Tavern, where we went for dinner. Asked them for IDs at door, no ID no entry, so proceeded to start throwing chairs at windows etc...police usually not good at attending as too many incidents but were quick on the scene to this one! All a bit scary...manager very apologetic to us but it's a daily occurrence in the Alice. Taxi straight back to the Hilton. Sunday arvo picked up at 3.30 to get back on Ghan, freshen up and change and out to old Telegraph Station for dinner under the stars, ... read more

Monday afternoon Outback Spirit Tours took us for an orientation tour of Alice Springs although we had done quite a bit of walking as well as a tour with the Ghan, it was interesting to hear different stories from Alice Springs and get to know our driver/guide Gary and another guide Kane, great blokes and we will have a great tour with these guys. Dinner was at the hotel Monday night and it was delish with a delicious piece of Wayghu beef with an entree and desert. Earlyish night as an 8am take off tomorrow in our monster bus/truck, its something else, quite new with only 30,000klms on the clock, a Mercedes truck with a small bus type set up on the back, lovely leather seats and everything onboard, iced water, big fridge full of food ... read more

Monday 17th saw us get our flight from Adelaide at around 1.40pm and into Darwn 5ish, great flight and great service (never thought I would say this about Qantas again). A really lovely curry of beef and eggplant, wines, beers....then later on cheese and crackers and wines....then chocolates! Taxi Novotel Hotel on the Esplanade, just in time for an ice cold beer and then dinner in their restaurant, delicious kangaroo fillets and John had a steak which was good too! Tuesday an easy day having a walk around town and down to the Six Tanks Brewery for happy hour at 4pm, decided to sit outside coz such a nice day but soon realised not the spot to be! A couple of local indigenous people decided to take a liking to us and wanted to interview us ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin » City of Darwin March 4th 2023

We are scheduled to take three days to get to Darwin, a city named to honour Charles Darwin. But the Captain announces that we are going to arrive a day early and have two days there as a compensation for missing Bali. Now Darwin is the Capital of the Northern Territories (NT) a vast part of Australia, which itself is huge. (Australia is actually almost the same size as the continental USA.) yet the whole population of the NT is only about 250,000, 120,000 of whom live in Darwin. It is in short more a mid sized town rather than a city and once you get outside the town, settlements are few and far between. Darwin itself was largely destroyed by Japanese bombing in WWII and then levelled again in 1974 by Cyclone Tracy, so pretty ... read more

An early (for us) buffet breakfast had us feeling full and ready to start the warm 39-degree day heading to Mataranka to swim at Bitter Springs. Unfortunately, a severe road fatality had happened earlier and roads in and out were closed for the day, a very sad tragedy for the town, our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the 2 women whose lives were lost and a solemn reminder to keep safe driving on the roads. We headed back to the township of Katherine to see what else to do for the day and ended up settling on going back to the Katherine Thermal Pools and spending a couple of hours there before heading back to our hotel to relax and swim in the pool. We were booked into the Nitmiluk Katherine Gorge ... read more

A short walk from our hostel to where we were picking up the rental car and there were no cars there. It was okay as we and another couple were collected and brought to the airport car rental place and worked out well for us as they had pool noodles to lend us for our trips to any of the springs and natural pools that were around (we were told to purchase them for this reason). A quick stop for breaky and food supplies and we were on our way to Katherine, a 3 + hour journey. Parts of the highway you can go 130 km/hr which at first seemed fast but by the end of the trip when we had to slow down to 100 felt normal and 100km slow as. We passed half a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Kata Tjuta July 22nd 2022

Today, it was totally KATA TJUKA. Located approximately 50km west of our accommodation at Yulara, Kata Tjuka means ‘many heads’ and is sacred to the local Aboriginal Anangu people. It forms an important focus of their spiritual life. The ochre-coloured shapes are an intriguing and mesmerising sight. We stopped at the dune viewing platform, still 25kms from Kata Tjuka, and viewed the large dome rock formations, of which there are 36, for an overall view. The highest dome of this sandstone monolith stands 546m above the surrounding plain. On arrival, we walked together to Karu, the first lookout on the Valley of the Winds trail, before fleet footed mountain goat Jane continued to the second lookout, Karingana, a grade 4 difficult walk. I returned to our starting point. We visited and walked a small section of ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Uluru July 21st 2022

Today, it was totally ULURU. Even though we had visited this spiritual place 16 years previously, it didn't fail to have the same effect on us again. This time we rode bikes around the base compared to walking all those years ago. We rode. We stopped, We walked. We photographed. We viewed. We marvelled. We lived the moment. We remained quiet. We sensed. We shared. We smiled. We were in awe. Mother nature capped it off by delivering a stunning sunset onto Uluru.... read more

A leisurely drive from Kings Canyon to Yulara had us arrive relaxed. Along the way the scenery remained fairly constant with grassland and low scrub with spindly trees dominating after the turn off on Lasseter Highway towards Yulara. Mt Connor stood out to the south of us. Yulara came about due to the unstructured and unmonitored tourism in the early 1970’s. This was having detrimental effects on the environment surrounding both Uluru and Kata Tjuta. The town of Yulara was proclaimed a town on August 10, 1976. It is 14 km from Uluru. We are staying at the Desert Gardens Hotel for 3 nights. Tonight we ate in the restaurant and toasted our wonderful adventures.... read more
