The Kimberley Drive

The drive from Katherine to the Kimberley region was really picturesque, with its constantly changing scenery it made the journey through the small towns of Australians northern outback a really enjoyable experience. One minute we were driving through a rugged hilly area, the next through a vast endless plain filled with bizarre shaped boab trees and other random plantlife and exotic features.

Our first stop after Katherine was the tiny dot on the map of Victoria River, population of about 50 or so. The campsite was basic but nice enough and we met a curious but comedic old Aussie bloke who had converted an old Greyhound bus into a motorhome which was literally four times the size of our van, big enough for its own specific beer fridge. We could only dream.

Losing our fruit

Our next point of call was driving through the border of the state of Western Australia where we sadly had to lose all our fruit, nuts and even honey to the strict quarantine laws, and after only just doing a big fruit and veg shop the previous day we ended up consuming a fair few oranges that morning.

With our petrol running fairly low we chugged into the town of Kununurra which was fairly small although with a large Aboriginal population and it had some fairly nice sights including a beautiful sunset viewing spot just opposite our campsite.

After a few more decent stretches of driving and a night in the tiny town of Halls Creek we arrived at a really fancy caravan park in Fitzroy Crossing in time to go on a boat trip up the Geike Gorge. The gorge had created a beautiful stretch of river which we cruised down, filled with freshwater crocodiles, massive eagles and unusual rock formations. The walk along the river was also an unexpected highlight, with an unusually lush landscape and the opportunity to see some huge kangaroos and wallabees up close as we stumbled through the track.
