We arrived at Nitmiluk National Park in time to set up and have a late lunch. It was very hot, 40 degrees yet again. We chose a site next to the swimming pool so kept cool with frequent visits to it. We knew Ali would be arriving sometime after 6:30pm. Between visits to the pool we kept an eye out for her as we had no mobile coverage to communicate with her and the office was closed. She finally arrived around 7:30. We had a hilarious night catching up which was punctuated with jokes and wild laughter. We probably had few people rolling their eyes, if they could hear us over their air-cons. Saturday we canoed the Kathrine Gorge. It was awesome and really the only way to truly appreciate its unique beauty and features. It ... read more

We rose early to catch the sunrise on the Devil’s Marbles, taking photos as we had breakfast. This resulted in an early departure (7:15), with a destination for Lake Woods as it had been highly recommended. We arrived in Tennent Creak at 9:30am and had a break as we accessed the internet and emails. While doing so we plugged the notebook into the 12v system for the first time. At our mid-morning break (where we brew REAL coffee) we found the gas ignition would not work. We soon realised that our whole 12v system in the caravan was dead, and to our horror we discovered that this meant that we no longer had any refrigeration. Our freezer was full of that wonderful rump steak and the day was going to be 40C+! We had some difficult ... read more

Day 12 – Wednesday July 11th – Katherine Gorge to Kakadu National Park We woke up to find a wallaby eating one of our tourist magazines as it couldn’t find the rubbish bag we had cunningly hidden inside one of our plastic containers. After breakfast we decided we should see the Katherine Gorge while we were there, without paying lots of money for a cruise. So we loaded up with snacks and water and headed off on the Butterfly Gorge walk, which is where we would be able to have a swim. It took 1½ hours of steady walking up and down sandy and rocky tracks, one wipe out from Meg (skin off elbow and bang to head L) before we reached the secluded second gorge. We were all on our own in the ... read more

11 July 2012 We ate a breakfast of sliced fruit and cut the rest of our fruit and veg into sandwiches and salads to comply with quarantine requirements as we left Kununurra and drove into the NT this morning. However it seems to be an honour system however, there was no staffed checkpoint. Apparently it is stricter entering WA, and we've been given some honey and half a watermelon by travellers going the other way. We drove through scrubby plains with a few hills, with what appeared to be some limestone outcrops. We had a look at Gregory's tree on the way past, it's a boab tree carved with the dates of Gregory's exploration departure and return dates. We were thinking of staying at the Big Horse Creek campsite but it was full, so we continued ... read more

Day 11 – Tuesday 10th July - Mataranka to Katherine Gorge After packing up we decided to check out the Rainbow Springs in Mataranka to see if they really are not quite as nice as the Bitter Springs. The pool was picturesque but not in the same league as the Bitter Springs. Anna and Luke checked out the water while Hazel and Mark went for a walk in the rainforest. We had arranged to meet Lloyd from the Mataranka Roadhouse at the Katherine Country Club at lunch while waiting for the Nicholls family to arrive from El Questro. Burgers, battered snapper, steak sandwich. Naughty but nice! Mid afternoon the Nichollses rolled into Katherine after a 7 hour drive. The 1½ hour time difference between WA and NT (WA is 1½ hours behind NT) scuppered ... read more

Katherine 6th July 2012 Leaving Timber Creek we were a ‘tad’ excited as we were now on our way across to Katherine, a town we have visited a number of times and we have always enjoyed being there. Our first stop was at Victoria River where the Victoria Highway crosses the Victoria River. There is not much here, a good camping ground and a roadhouse that services’ passing traffic and the campers’ makes up this spot on the map. We called in to see what happens here and have a cool drink as it has constantly been around 30C for the past few months now, every day! Now everyone knows, (or should do), about the ability of having a very likeable dog in tow to attract conversation. Sitting at a table outside whilst having our drinks ... read more

... read more

There were a few more sites to see on the way out of Kakadu so we hit the road early. First up we went on a trek for a couple of kms and saw more Aboriginal rock art before we were taken to a great vantage point to take some more photos. Unfortunately much of the area in Kakadu is being burnt off right now so the smoke haze dulled the view somewhat. Our last stop on the way out of Kakadu was to Yellow Water Billabong and this was the highlight. We weren’t cashed up enough to take advantage of one of the cruises; however, the boardwalk provided a great viewing platform for a unique ecosystem. The plantlife seemed in full bloom and we watched small fish dart about in the shallows below. On the ... read more

Gorgeous is a word that Australians use to describe food, which is an expression I quite like. However today I'm talking about 'gorges', as in deep canyons. We hiked around Katherine Gorge -breathtaking- and bought Majeed a leather hat, so he totally looks like you imagine a dashingly handsome dark-haired Australian would look. We saw these totally awesome birds called "Great Bowerbird" doing their mating thing. The male birds makes these grassy doorways and throws all kind of materials in the doorways to attract the female. It's quite a show and we were very excited to be able to see it. Then we drove to Mattaranka Falls to find a campground and sleep the night. Tomorrow, Mattaranka natural hot springs. Scroll down for more photos!... read more
