Hi all, today is our second full day in Alice. We decided it was time to go and find the famous waterholes. But before we could do that we needed the obligatory McDonalds coffee and cake. Headed off on a 90km drive to find the Ellery Creek Big Hole. It is a spectacular waterhole fed by the Ellery River. It is not running at the moment but you can see the signs of the floods meters above the current level. The river cuts through the MacDonnell Ranges and no doubt it has taken millions of years to cut out this gorge in the mountains. The Terran is rugged and unforgiving and the bird wildlife was abundant. I wanted to bring one of the local Quails home. Even though the scenery was spectacular we found a significant ... read more

Hello again, today is the first day in Alice Springs. We woke up to a beautiful sunny morning and had a lazy start. By 9.30am we had finished breakfast and headed off to our first touristy destination. We visited the Alice Springs Desert Park. This is an Australian native zoo. We arrived at about 10.30am and had time to see the dingo enclosure (mind you the dingos did not want to see us). At 11am we joined an Aboriginal presentation on survival in the desert with information on desert food, implements and fire starting with wood and kangaroo poo. At the end of this Xavier was so impressed he wanted a photo with the presenter. Not sure who had the darkest tan. We headed off to the Nocturnal enclosure, Lisa was so impressed with the snakes. ... read more

Another week has quickly slipped by since I last wrote a blog. Time seems to mean very little out here though which is just wonderful. Each morning I have to concentrate very hard to work out what day of the week it is. We have now been in Alice Springs for 6 nights and tomorrow we will set off out into the West McDonnell Ranges. But I am jumping ahead too quickly. Our last day at Uluru was as hectic as the previous two, with the exception that we did not rise at the crack of dawn, but had a more leisurely start to our day. So much so that we were almost late for the 10am start of the ranger led Marla Walk. However we made it and it was absolutely wonderful. The walk lasted ... read more

Hi everyone, today is another one of our travel days. The distances between these towns in outback Australia are hundreds of kilometres apart and a simple drive down the road can easily be in the hundreds of kilometres. Today is one of those days. The trip from Coober Pedy to Alice Springs is 699 kilometres. Basically driving time is 7 hours on an average of 100km per hour. We left Coober Pedy just after 9am after filling up with diesel and water. We even had to pay for the water. It was 20cents for 40 litres. Now given we have driven so much already my expectations of this leg were somewhat confused. We're we in for a boring drive, was it going to take forever and what types of towns were in our path? First let's ... read more

We got an early start because we had to make up some time. Tonight, according to the spreadsheet we should be at Tobermorey Station, but instead we were aiming for Jervois Station (about 250km short). We had to stop off in Alice Springs to get gas, wood and a digital air pressure gauge (and some food and alcohol). It's clear why they call Alice Springs the New York of the Centre. In the Woolies carpark there were a bunch of black guys listening to hip hop. After the guy at Cellarbrations wouldn't serve us in Coober Pedy we were starting to run low on wine (plenty of Asahi though). In Alice Springs liquor stores don't open until 2pm and then only when the police turn up to stand outside. I have to confess I find this ... read more

As you can imagine with 14 people, all with their own agendas, trying to get a consensus on how the trip to Uluru was going to happen caused a lot of discussion. In the end 3 people decided not to go as they had been before, 4 of us opted for the organised tour, and the remaining 7 hired a car and made their own way (including an overnight camp at Curtain Springs as the hire conditions didn't allow for night driving). So - an early start for us with a 5.45 pickup and then a tour round the town doing other pickups from hostels and hotels before setting off. Nice comfortable air conditioned coach and a stop at Curtain Springs Roadhouse for a large buffet breakfast, before our first sightseeing stop to view Mount Connor. ... read more

Today we explored the area around Alice Springs, in the Outback of Australia. We started with as visit to the Desert Park, a preserve featuring many vistas and animals that make up the area. This country reminds me of southern Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, and northern Mexico. While this is desert country, the area has received much rainfall and is very green, compared to the dry, brown that is typical of this time of year. In fact, our visits were interrupted by a significant storm that cut our outdoor activities short, but brought much relief from the heat. The Desert Park had a very interesting bird show highlighting many of the special birds from around the country side. I have published several pictures from my visit today. Later, we visited School of the Air, a ... read more

Today we flew the two hours from Adelaide to Alice Springs, in the middle of the Outback. It was quite a shock as we left the plane to 102 degree weather. As the humidity was around 30%, it is what we call a "dry heat". Just plain hot. We started with a tour of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the air flight group that serves the urgent care needs of the entire country of Australia. It was an interesting exhibit that included a video and a museum of the service dating back to the early 1900's. From there, we traveled to the old telegraph station, the site of the first telegraph relay station in Australia that connected the north to the south. Men were sent out on camels to cut down trees to erect poles. A ... read more

We have enjoyed a little break from the road at Alice Springs and caught up a bit on some jobs that needed doing. I had needed a new battery in my watch for more than 2 weeks and we also had to get some antihistamine for the spectacular insect bite collection. Brian was particularly suffering which is unusual. We also met up with our old Heading Bush guide friend Michael for a drink and a catch up. We have an outline route planned to get us back to Melbourne on September 19th and now we have booked somewhere to stay for a week that will enable us to get all our stuff cleaned up and finish packing our shipping container. We also needed some time to think about our next trip to New Zealand and learning ... read more
