Arrived in Junee Sunday and so lovely to see Diddles and Amanda are in their lovely new country house on the outskirts of Junee. It has taken a LONG time to get built as it is a specialist build with all beams dowelled together with no nails etc. So nice and well deserved after waiting sooo long! Very picturesque spot overlooking the town of Junee. Diddles took John for a tour of the abattoirs in Junee and John was very impressed with the automated system that Diddles designed for them and they process 5,600 head of sheep per day, Diddles is a very clever fellow! We left Junee Monday 23rd and headed to Wang, stopping over in Holbrook for lunch at their famous bakery. Weather is getting cooler and needing long pants and windcheaters even though ... read more

Inte ... read more

You only realise how big a country Australia is when you have to traverse across it quickly, towing a caravan. We drove four solid eight and and a half hour days, stopping at Barkley Homestead, a Road Side Rest area near McKinley, Lara Wetlands (2 nights), Cunnamulla then through to Wellington. It was great to be able to again visit Lara Wetlands and rest up and soak in the hot thermal pools before continuing our long drive south-east. My Dad was out of hospital and at home, and we will stay here as long as is necessary to support my parents.... read more

Our run of beautiful weather has come to an end. Today it is not just overcast, it is raining. On the plus side it is getting us psychologically prepared for our return to Melbourne’s wet and cold weather. Today we started heading south in earnest clocking up 451 kilometres in the truck. We even managed to drive the truck out of the car park without incident and without Bernie making me ride on the running board to weigh the car down more on the side he was worried about touching the height guide/barrier. I’m not sure he was ever serious about that, but last night he was telling me that I might have to ride the running board to get the car out of the car park!!? We set out from Terrigal through Gosford and then ... read more

It was a bit overcast when we got going today, but we can’t complain because we have been enjoying fabulous weather until now. We decided last night, after maneuvering the truck into the car park, that we would have to explore on foot today because of it being such a tight fit. It occurred to both of us, after it was unloaded, that it might be riding a bit higher without the load in the back which could make it an even tighter fit under the height barrier?? Taking it out again tomorrow will be stressful enough without trying to take it out and back in today!! We headed out along Terrigal Drive and spotted a couple of kookaburras on top of a light pole, then a couple more on the next light pole. On the ... read more

This morning it was cloudy, yes, cloudy! Although there did seem to be a patch of sunshine hovering over the motel. The big worry was, looking south in the direction we were about to set off in, it was positively gloomy. Oh dear, our good run of weather might be over? We set out on Bulahdelah Way and soon merged onto the Pacific Highway. Hmmn, as anticipated, it wasn’t long before a light drizzle misted the windscreen. So light that Bernie had to activate the wipers to clear it because it hadn’t set the sensor off. Two or three intermittent wipes later the drizzle (heavy mist?) was done and the weather just continued to improve as we drove towards Newcastle. Lucky, eh? Before we reached Newcastle we took the turn-off for Maitland where we made our ... read more

This morning we woke to yet another beautiful sunny day on the NSW coast. We have been so lucky with the weather, we really could not have asked for it to be any better. After breakfast we set out north (-ish) to drive back along The Lakes Way so we could visit yet another lighthouse! Between Myall Lake and Smiths Lake we turned onto Seal Rocks Road to drive out to the ocean. Our first stop was at Number One Beach where we stretched our legs and took a couple of photos. We watched a couple of black oystercatchers looking for their breakfast off the rocks. One was scrabbling around at the base of a rock between waves – it didn’t seem to want to get its feet wet? – and eventually succeeded in digging out ... read more

Before heading south this morning we called in at the Port Macquarie Museum. The museum is currently celebrating Port Macquarie’s bicentenary with its 20 Decades, 21 Stories Bicentenary Exhibition Trail. The trail starts with information about the Birpai People, the traditional owners of the area around Port Macquarie. The exhibitions continue with stories about the establishment of a penal settlement in the 1820s and free settlement in the 1840s. It progresses through the 19th century providing information about education, trade and transport, experiments with growing sugar, the timber industry and federation. In the lead up to federation, Sir Edmund Barton, Australia’s first Prime Minister, was the elected representative for the Hastings-Macleay District. Progressing into the 20th century the exhibits deal with WWI, commerce and banking, the advent of touris... read more

This morning after breakfast we decided to head south on the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk to achieve our 30 minutes exercise goal while it was still early. The walk goes all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, but we didn’t have any ambition to walk quite that far this morning! We stopped off at the Flagstaff Lookout and then walked for about another 10 minutes before turning around to walk back to the apartment to get ready for our 12 noon whale watching tour. Yes, at the risk of seeming obsessed with whale watching we booked another tour for today … still hoping that we might see a whale breach?? On Monday we were told that the whales are more likely to breach if it is a bit choppy because it becomes difficult for them to ... read more
