We headed to Mildura after Renmark .. back in Victoria. Mildura is quite a big town, city really, with wide streets and all the usual shops. From Mildura, we diverted to Wentworth, 25 or so kilometres from Mildura, the road lined with yet more grapevines and/or orange trees. Our big decision was .. will we go to Broken Hill or will we continue along the Murray?
Wentworth is where the Darling and Murray Rivers meet and it's interesting to stand on the bank and see where these two rivers merge. There is a small Fergie (the Ferguson tractor) on high in the main street and also the river bank park has a Fergie and the name 'Fergie' both shaped from small plants.
It seems that around 1956, Wentworth was in the path of floodwaters and locals were worried the town would go under. An army of farmers from near and far rode their Fergies into town and promptly used them to make a levy bank, thus saving the town. Each year the town holds the popular Fergie Tractor Rally.
After our Wentworth diversion, the big question remained .. Broken Hill or Swan Hill? We decided we'd go back
to Mildura for the night. We have seen a lot of the outback this trip and there are long distances between towns. So Broken Hill will be saved for another day - we love going there but are anxious to get home to get ready for our annual trip up to Queensland and warmer weather.
We've been lucky with our sites along the Murray, all have had great sights of the river. At Mildura we were once more on the waterfront and could watch the paddle steamer, Murray Princess, paddling up the river, and were one row back at Swan Hill and watched the Pyap, another little paddle boat .. it seems every town on the Murray has one, or as is the case of Wentworth, is doing up an old paddleboat ready to give it new life.
We are on the homeward journey and should be back home by the end of the week. It's been an interesting trip, not totally as planned, but fun all the same.
Happy birthday to two special girls, Tara and Isis. I hope you've had a wonderful day xx
