Day Seven: The following morning, or perhaps just slightly later that same morning, there was none of the usual 7 am stirrings and no usual wake-up music from the Pinky's lounge. Eventually we did stir around 9 am, mostly because the sun was coming in through 3 different windows and all hitting me in the face! The kitchen/dinning room was about half full but very quiet as a stumbled in. The boys were mumbling quietly into their cornflakes and several others were nursing their third or fourth of many coffees. With no structured programme for the day we were free to eat whatever we found in the student fridge (mainly cheesecake and other left over puddings!) so breakfast blurred into more coffee and a pudding brunch and on into random salad-and-leftovers lunch. We had been planning ... read more

The flight from New Zealand was uneventful. I said goodbye to the spectacular Southern Alps and the West Coast and then got bored looking out of the window at the sea, although i swear i saw a whale breaching as we approached Australia. I was in a state of unreality during most of it - it just wouldnt sink in that i was going to be in Australia! As we neared the coast however i got a little excited and my nose was glued to the window until we landed. Mostly we saw lots of trees and hills, then the Syndey suburbs came into view - lots of little houses accompanied by little blue swimming pool diamonds. The plane banked and we flew right over the city and i got a good view of the Sydney ... read more

Despite all the beach culture, Australia still knows how to throw one hell of a pasture party. Tamworth, located about 400km NW of Sydney, is considered the country music capital of Australia. Each year the town of 50,000 people hosts a week-long music festival and opens their arms to another 50,000 visitors (and their wallets!). The music festival had a country base, but there was also bluegrass, folk, indie-alternative bands, 11-yr old boys who killed on the guitar (and 71-yr old boys who can still rock with the best of them). The sidewalks of downtown were lined with up-and-coming talent playing their tunes as people passed by- they called it “busking”- in fact, that’s how Keith Urban got his start! They had venues all over town with shows starting at 10am and playing through 3am, with ... read more

After i was all done in cairns i headed back down to sydney to catch a train to tamworth where i was doing a 5 day jackeroo course, basically it's a cowboy course. It was spent riding horses which i have never done before, and using the horses to gather in cattle, along with some whip cracking and lasooing. I also watched a sheep get slaughtered which was great fun, and then whilst the guy was taking out itgs innards we had a couple of vet students on the course and they were talking through the different parts. We across the womb and it turned out there was a little feotus in the embryotic sac whicvh was such a lucky thing to see. It was only the size of the tip of your finger and you ... read more

I arrived in Tamworth at my friend Pip's place, about a 4 hour drive west from Bellingen. The transition from the green pastures of the coast to the drought stricken paddocks as I headed to Tamworth was quite remarkable. Trisha from Brisbane arrived about an hour after me and then she dashed off to one of her engagements as she's a mover and a shaker in the bush poetry world. It was a week packed with bush poetry, country music, balladeers and catching up with friends from years ago. Memories of a memorable 1995 bush poetry tour to outback Queensland, east of Longreach and Winton and particularly Elab Station where we stayed a few days and were treated to tours of the thousands of hectare property and enjoyed barbqs and music under the clear night sky ... read more

We have varied and vast musical tastes , we listen to most genres , one in particular has always held a soft spot ..... Country..... I (Scibe ) love bluegrass and Modern, Jo who plays the Harmonica has leaning toward folksy , Harmonica driven stuff. We have our favourites and are pleased to report that all the talent there is very accomodating towards their listeners, I have always loved Melinda Schnieder's music and Jo has a torch , as does a few of the ladies , for Lee Kernaghan. We had no trouble getting those stars of country to sign our Book and pose for photos, Melinda especially had the patience to allow me to have several shots lest one gets my not so good side, lol, She looked gorgeous in all of them. Hello all and greetings from Simmo's Tour of BEWDY!! Back by popular demand after a lengthy 6 week hiatus. There is so much to fill you all in on over that time so I might write a couple of entries over the next few days. Of course, I might get inspired and write one lengthy entry right now - let's just see how it all pans out! After leaving the gorgeous Sydney rain clouds behind I ventured north-west to Tamworth - self appointed Home of Australian Country Music - on the 16th of June. I gave myself 4 days between arriving in Tamworth and starting the much anticipated Jackaroo school and in hindsight, maybe 1 or two days would have been enough. Why? Well, you see, I have to be very careful how I word this ... read more
